Welcome back to our continuing journey through the history of the Walt Disney Company. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- September 10.
September 10th was a busy day in Disney history, with the release of a Pluto cartoon, the premiere of the Disney Afternoon, and the loss of a Disney Legend. So, let’s get started!
King Neptune Released (1932)
On this day in 1932, the Silly Symphony King Neptune was released.
Pluto’s Fledgling Released (1948)
On this day in 1948, the Pluto cartoon Pluto’s Fledgling was released.
In the cartoon, Pluto helps Orville the bird learn to fly.
Zorro the Avenger Released (1959)
On this day in 1959, Disney released Zorro the Avenger.
Released in Japan, the film was a compilation of six Zorro television episodes.
The Disney Afternoon Premieres (1990)
On this day in 1990. The Disney Afternoon premiered.
The two-hour television program featured shows including Gummi Bears, DuckTales, Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers, and TaleSpin.
Tatooine Traders Opens (1999)
On this day in 1999, Tatooine Traders opened at the Disney-MGM Studios.
Previously called the Endor Vendors, the shop is located at the exit to Star Tours.
Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique Opens (2007)
On this day in 2007, Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique opened in the Magic Kingdom.
The boutique allows young guests to get a makeover as a princess or prince.
The First-Ever D23 Expo Begins (2009)
On this day in 2009, The Walt Disney Company launched the first-ever D23 Expo.
The fan gathering would become an annual tradition.
Pair of Kings Debuts (2010)
On this day in 2010, Pair of Kings debuted on Disney XD.
The show tells the story of fraternal twins Brady and Boomer who learn that they are heirs to the throne of the island nation of Kinkow.
X Atencio Passes Away (2017)
On this day in 2017, Disney Legend X Atencio passed away at the age of 98.
Atencio started at Disney in the animation department in 1938, before moving on to Walt Disney Imagineering. While at WED, Atencio worked on attractions including the Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean.
Atencio also wrote the lyrics to “Yo Ho A Pirates Life For Me” and “Grim Grinning Ghosts”.
