August 31st was a big day in Disney’s history, with the debut of two Disney animated series, the retirement of a Disney Legend, and a massive purchase for Disney.

Pluto’s Judgement Day (1935)
On this day in 1935, the Pluto cartoon Pluto’s Judgement Day was released.

In the cartoon, Pluto dreams that he is put on trial in hell and judged by a jury of vindictive cats.
Walt and Roy Put A Deposit Down For Burbank Studio (1938)
On this day in 1938, Walt and Roy Disney placed a $10,000 deposit on a 51-acre tract of land in Burbank, California.
The land would eventually be home to the Disney Studios!
Get Rich Quick Released (1951)
On this day in 1951, the Goofy cartoon Get Rich Quick was released.

In the cartoon, Goofy tries his hand at gambling and initially starts to win.
Ward Kimball Retires (1973)
On this day in 1973, Ward Kimball officially retired from Disney.

The future Disney Legend would continue to consult with the company following his retirement.
Ron Dominguez Retires (1994)
On this day in 1994, Diseny executive Ron Dominguez retired.

The Vice President of Walt Disney Attractions started his career as a Disneyland Cast Member on the park’s opening day in 1955.
Dominguez would be named a Disney Legend in 2000.
Recess Premiers (1997)
On this day in 1997, Recess premiered on ABC.

Disney’s newest animated series was given a “sneak preview” before its official debut on September 13.
Hercules The Animated Series Premiers (1998)
On this day in 1998, Disney’s Hercules, an animated series premiered.

The series was based on the 1997 film Hercules and told the story of teenage Hercules attending high school.
L’Orginale Alfredo di Roma Ristorante Closes (2007)
On this day in 2007, L’Orginale Afredo di Roma Ristorante closed in Epcot’s Italy pavilion.

An original EPOCT Center restaurant, L’Originale Alfredo di Roma Ristorante would be replaced by Tutto Italia.
Disney Buys Marvel (2009)
On this day in 2009, The Walt Disney Company announced that it was buying Marvel Entertainment for $4 Billion.

The transaction gave Disney the rights to over 5,000 characters, and would eventually herald in the Golden Age of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Secret of the Wings Premieres (2012)
On this day in 2012, Secret of the Wings premiered at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood.

In the film, Tinker Bell and her fairy friends journey into the mysterious Winter Woods.
Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters Closes (2017)
Also on this day in 2017, Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters closed in Hong Kong Disneyland.

The attraction, which had originally opened in September 2005, was replaced by Ant-Man and The Wasp: Nano Battle
