Despite Its Share of Failures, Disney is Still Dominating the Box Office
While it is no secret that Disney has struggled at the box office in 2023, reports of the studio’s demise may be slightly overstated.
From January 1 through July 2, Disney topped all studios with a $3.4 billion gross at the box office.
Through its first seven theatrical releases, Disney has brought in $1.35 billion from domestic theaters and $2.05 billion abroad.
Besting The Competition
While the individual film results have not reached Disney’s expectations, the studio has earned almost four times what Paramount ($871 million from five movies) and Warner Bros ($898 million with six movies) have grossed. Disney has also tripled Sony ($1.1 billion with 15 movies).
The studio’s biggest competitor at the box office has been Universal, which has brought in $2.89 billion off 14 titles. $1.33 billion of Universal’s haul has come from The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the highest-grossing film of the year.
Marvel Vs. DC
While much has been made of Marvel’s box office troubles of late, the last three Marvel films — Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 have combined to total $2.1 billion worldwide. This crushes rival Warner Bros. DC, which has brought in $773 million from Black Adam, Shazam: Fury of the Gods, and The Flash.
Finally, among the top 20 grossing films of the year to date, Disney is responsible for five of them. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 comes in at #2, The Little Mermaid at #5, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania at #6, Elemental at #12, and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny at #16.
While Disney’s films may not perform up to the studio’s standards, movie theater owners are still relying on the Mouse House to bring audiences to theaters.
