Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman Reveal the Secret to Their 17 Year Friendship
While they may occasionally grab headlines for their faux-feud on social media, Ryan Reynolds and High Jackman have been friends for 17 years.
The duo is set to take their friendship to the next level with the upcoming Marvel film Deadpool & Wolverine, which is set to hit theaters on July 26.

While Jackman has previously spoken about how his friendship with Reynolds convinced him to reprise his role as the iconic X-Man, in a recent interview with People, the duo discussed their deep friendship.
“We rely on each other for the real kind of advice that you want,” Reynolds began.
Meeting on ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’
It has been 17 years since Reynolds and Jackman met on the set of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. While Jackman was already an established star, Reynolds was just beginning to find himself on the A-list.

Waking on set, Reynolds says he was “blown away.”
“I was walking through the trailers, jet-lagged, disoriented, feeling really green and kind of out of my depth, and there was no script to look at. It was just like, what’s going to happen?” he recalled.
“And I heard my name, ‘Ryan!’ in between these trailers as I was walking. And it was you. Just the fact that you knew my name meant so much to me. And you came over, you gave me a big hug and you said, ‘Welcome aboard.’”

17 years later, it was Reynolds’ turn to repay the favor. With Jackman now signing on to join the Deadpool franchise, Reynolds greeted his old friend:
“And I remember the first day of this [movie], and you came, and you did the same thing,” recalls Jackman. “You came over, and you went, “Steve!”
A Special Friendship
Over the intervening 17 years, Jackman and Reynolds have developed the kind of relationship that is hard to come by.

“There’s probably fewer friends in our life that you can say anything to, the stuff you’re ashamed, embarrassed, anything,” Jackman told Reynolds.

“And ever since I’ve known you, and I would say in particular in like the last five, 10 years, we’ve had more time where we go for our walks because you’re an unbelievable listener,” he continued. “So you can tell me anything and I can tell you anything, and I don’t feel like you’re going to be judging or necessarily giving me the answer: ‘Do this.’ And I think that has been the key.”
The “Secret Sauce”
For Reynolds, the relationship reminds him of marriage.
“I think the secret sauce to a long-lasting Hollywood friendship is not too dissimilar to having a partner or a marriage,” he explained.

“I am genuinely rooting for you, all the time. I want you to win. It’s the same way I feel about [his wife Blake Lively]. As I’m rooting for her, I know she’s rooting for me, and it’s why we’re so connected.”

While it’s clear the duo has a special bond, their on-screen chemistry will take center stage when Deadpool & Wolverine debut on July 26.
