Welcome back to our magical foray through the history of The Walt Disney Company. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- August 28.
August 28th was a busy day in the history of Disney, with the release a classic Mickey cartoon, a milestone for Disney on Broadway, and the debut of a new kind of Audio-Animatronic.
Gallopin’ Gaucho Released (1928)
On this day in 1928, the Mickey Mouse cartoon Gallopin’ Gaucho was released.
The short was a parody of the Douglas Fairbanks film The Gaucho, and was the second Mickey cartoon produced.
Gallopin’ Gaucho would not be released until after both Steamboat Wilie and Plane Crazy.
Mickey’s Follies Released (1929)
On this day in 1929, the Mickey Mouse cartoon Mickey’s Follies was released.
In the cartoon, Mickey and his barnyard animal friends put on a show that includes Mickey’s rendition of his theme song “Minnie’s Yoo Hoo”.
The Truth About Mother Goose Released (1957)
On this day in 1957, the Disney animated film The Truth About Mother Goose was released.
The short took viewers behind the scenes of 3 classic nursery rhymes “Little Jack Horner,” “Mary Mary Quite Contrary,” and “London Bridge.”
Jim Henson and Kermit Visit The Disney-MGM Studios
On this day in 1989, Jim Henson and Kermit the Frog left their imprints and signatures in the courtyard in front of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre.
Henson was making a special appearance at the park to announce his pending partnership with the Walt Disney Company.
Mother Goose Stories Debuted (1990)
On this day in 1990, Mother Goose Stories, a television show combining live-action and puppetry, debuted on the Disney Channel.
The show was the first new show to feature puppets from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop following Henson’s death.
The Art of Disney Opens (1994)
On this day in 1994, The Art of Disney shop opened in the Disney Village Marketplace.
Beauty and the Beast on Broadway Hits Milestone (2001)
On this day in 2001, Disney’s Broadway show Beauty and the Beast celebrated its 3000th performance.
The show originally debuted April 18, 1994.
Lucky the Dinosaur Debuts (2003)
On this day in 2003, Lucky the Dinosaur debuted at The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles.
Luck was the first Audio-Animatronic figure to walk freely and interact with park guests.
Bob the Butler Premierse (2005)
On this day in 2005, Bob the Butler premiered on the Disney Channel.
The film starred Tom Green as Bob, an incompetent man who gets a job as a manservant.
The Pixar Story Released (2007)
On this day in 2007, The Pixar Story was released.
The documentary by Leslie Iwerks explored the first years of Pixar Animation Studios.
Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie Airs (2009)
On this day in 2009, Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie debuted on the Disney Channel.
The film, which was based on the popular series, was viewed by 11 million people.
Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Dedicated (2019)
On this day in 2019, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge was dedicated at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
The new 13-acre themed land opened with Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run. On hand for the festivities was Bob Chapek.
Chadwick Boseman Passes Away (2020)
On this day in 2020, Chadwick Boseman passed away at the age of 43.
Boseman was perhaps best known for his role as Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Candace Against the Universe Premieres (2020)
Also on this day in 2020 Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Candace Against the Universe premiered on Disney+.
The film saw stepbrothers Phineas and Ferb set out across the galaxy to rescue their older sister Candace. The film was a triumphant return for the popular Phineas and Ferb franchise.
