Deborah Chow Gives Star Wars Fans A New Hope For ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Season 2
Although Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has repeatedly shot down the notion that Obi-Wan Kenobi could return for a second season, rumors of the show’s return will not go away.
With Ewan McGregor consistently saying that he is on board for another turn as the legendary Jedi Knight, he would seem short-sided of Lucasfilm not to capitalize on the opportunity while they can.
Conceived as a Limited-Series
As showrunnner Deborah Chow stated at the conclusion of Kenobi, the show was always conceived as a limited series.
“This was always conceived of as a limited [series], and I’m sure you can tell from the story that it is closed. We did obviously seem to tell one big story. Who knows, there’s ten more years before ‘A New Hope’ starts, so never say never. But for this particular [project], it really was conceived to be a limited [series].”
Despite being advertised as a one-off, Star Wars fans have continued to clamor for a second series of the Disney+ show.
Kennedy Says “No Plans For Expansion”
Still, Kennedy has remained steadfast that the show’s run is over.
“I always hesitate to say ‘No, we won’t do anything more with ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’,” she said. “Maybe what we end up doing is something that gets incorporated into some of the other stories we’re doing. Or eventually a movie. Who knows?,” she said in May.
“But right now [Obi-Wan Kenobi] is still our standalone, limited series. We have no plans for expansion right now.”
A New Hope
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Deborah Chow gave Star Wars fans new hope that Obi-Wan could return.
While reiterating that the show was conceived as a limited series, Chow talked about McGregor’s excitement about a possible second season.
“You always think you’re going to end a series like this in some magnificent way. But, instead, you end up in a parking lot with second unit and hardly anybody there. It’s always so anticlimactic, but as Ewan and I finished our very last shot on second unit and I was literally taking off my headphones, he was already pitching me ideas for season two. There’s another 10 years with plenty of stories, and I don’t think it’s off the board. It is a ‘never say never’ situation, but we really did conceive this to be a limited series.”
For now, it doesn’t appear that Obi-Wan Kenobi will get a second season. With Ewan McGregor pushing for more episodes to be made, and Chow open to the idea, I wouldn’t write off a return of the Jedi Knight just yet.
