Why The Singing Busts Aren’t In ‘Haunted Mansion’
The following post contains small Haunted Mansion spoilers. If you haven’t seen the film yet, this is your warning!
While Haunted Mansion may not have been the rousing success that Disney was hoping for, as a huge fan of the attraction, I thought the movie was a blast.
Seeing not only the Haunted Mansion’s iconic characters but also memorable sights and props brought to the big screen, was truly a delight.
Justin Simien created a love letter to the classic Disney attraction, and fans should be thrilled.
With all that being said, after returning home from seeing the movie, one question instantly popped into my head. What happened to the Singing Busts?
What Happened to The Singing Busts
For those who have ridden the Haunted Manion, the quartet of singing busts in the attraction’s graveyard comes to mind instantly when thinking about the attraction.
Despite featuring lesser-known graveyard characters like the Mummy and the Opera Singer, the Singing Busts were notably absent from the film.
According to Haunted Mansion cinematographer Jeffrey Waldron, a scene featuring the Singing Busts was filmed. Ultimately, however, it was left on the cutting room floor.
“You know, we did shoot a piece for it, was the Singing Busts. Which I think for fans, it’s going to be a little bit of a bummer that it doesn’t make it. But the Singing Busts that sing ‘Grim Grinning Ghosts’ in that final Disneyland sequence. We shot them in the graveyard as part of the initial tour and just didn’t make the cut,” Waldron said.
A Vast Collection of Creepy Creeps
While the Singing Busts didn’t make the final cut, Haunted Mansion fans will recognize all kinds of other happy haunts in the film. Even Waldron was impressed with how many Easter eggs the film had.
“But that’s kind of the only, and having just filmed there last weekend, I went back to Disneyland and rode it a couple of times, that’s the only thing [that] sort of got away. Everything else is super in there. More than I could have ever even remembered from the ride before we made it.”
While Haunted Mansion fans will likely be a little disappointed not to see the quirky quartet on the big screen, perhaps we will get to see the Singing Busts when the film lands on home media.
Disney’s Haunted Mansion is in theaters now.
