Natasha Liu Bordizzo On The Live-Action Debut Of Sabine Wren In ‘Ahsoka’
While Star Wars fans are unsurprisingly excited for next month’s premiere of Ahsoka on Disney+, the new series will have special meaning for fans of the animated Star Wars Rebels series.
Rebels was set in the period between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope and introduced audiences to the Ghost Crew — a rag-tag team of rebels who eventually became something of a family.
The series ended with young Jedi Ezra Bridger launching himself into hyperspace with Grand Admiral Thrawn in order to stop the Imperial officer once and for all.
With Ahsoka set to pick up the loose threads of the fourth season of Rebels, fans are excited to see their favorite Ghost crew members in live-action.

Sabine Wren Will Make The Jump To Live-Action
Ahsoka will be especially important for one Ghost crew member, the Mandalorian Sabine Wren. At the conclusion of the Rebels, Sabine was ready to set off with Ahsoka Tano to find Ezra and bring him home.
The character will be portrayed by Natasha Liu Bordizzo in live-action. In a recent interview with SFX magazine, however, Bordizzo gave credit to voice actor Tiya Sircar for helping to create Sabine in Rebels.

“I loved Tiya Sircar’s Sabine!” Bordizzo shared. “I loved the energy, the sarcasm, and playfulness that really made Sabine Sabine, but obviously, it’s a delicate balance because I never want to try to copy someone. And I want to be inspired by the energy they put into the character and then make the role my own.”
Finding Her Own Journey
According to Bordizzo, a key part of her performance was understanding the character’s history, while also creating something new. To do this, the actress, watched all the Star Wars media she could, just not after they started actually filming Ahsoka.
“Of course, I watched everything… including the original films, The Mandalorian, and, of course, Rebels. But I didn’t watch anything after we started filming because otherwise, it gets too much. You want to have space, take all the experiences and memories and inspirations from everything you’ve watched, and then let the live action you’re creating find its own truth, its own journey.”
Relying On Filoni
Lucikly for Bordizzo, Sabine’s creator, and the man behind Star Wars Rebels, Dave Filoni, is also helming Ahsoka. While he was a resource for Bordizzo and other actors, he also wanted them to make the characters their own.

“Just to have the creator around every day is a luxury,” Bordizzo detailed. “He’s like this bottomless pit of knowledge and the guardian of the story and the characters. Also, he really just trusted us. While we’d go to him for guidance, he’d also say, ‘You are Sabine, so whatever you instinctually feel is right is right.'”
As a Star Wars Rebels fan, I cannot wait for Ahsoka to finally arrive. The show will stream exclusively on Disney+ beginning August 23, 2023.
