Three Takeaways and A Question From The New ‘Ahsoka’ Trailer
As I sit here today, we are just 43 days from the premiere of Ahsoka on Disney+. The new Star Wars series will finally give the fan-favorite former Jedi a chance to shine, while also picking up the story of Star Wars Rebels.
Ahead of the show’s release, Disney unveiled a new trailer today that gives more context for what Star Wars fans can expect from the upcoming show. Set during The Mandalorian Season 3, Ahsoka will see Anakin Skywalker’s former apprentice reunite the Ghost crew to stop the rise of Grand Amiral Thrawn as Heir to the Empire.
If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, you better watch it now!
Alright, now that we are all on the same page, let’s dive into some of the revelations from the new Ahsoka trailer, and the questions that arise.
Ahsoka Trained Sabine
The biggest revelation in the trailer is that Ahsoka has been training Sabine. Despite not being a Force user, Sabine has previously received lightsaber training from Kanaan and Ezra.
In the trailer, Ahsoka talks about her difficulty in training Sabine, due to the latter’s stubbornness.
She also references “walking away” from Sabine just like she says she walked away from Anakin. Despite this, we get a quick shot of Sabine calling Ahsoka “Master.” It looks like Ahsoka and Sabine will have to mend their relationship as they try and stop Thrawn.
Not Jedi
Sabine’s inability to use the Force likely precludes her from being a Jedi in a technical sense, but that is okay. Ahsoka has long stated that she is no Jedi and seems to have evolved beyond the Order. Still, Ahsoka is firmly rooted in the Light side of the Force.
Paralleling Ahsoka is Ray Stevenson’s Baylan Skoll. The former Jedi has also forsaken the path he was on and now seems to tap into the Dark side for his power. Despite his propensity for the Dark side, Skoll is no Sith.
In fact, in Ahsoka, we get nuance. The galaxy seems to be moving away from the traditional roles of Jedi and Sith and into a more complex understanding of the Force.
Anakin Skywalker Casts A Shadow
Speaking of Baylan Skoll, it turns out that the former Jedi knew Anakin Skywalker.
“Anakin spoke highly of you,” Skoll tells Ahsoka as they prepare to face off.
The ghost of Anakin Skywalker has haunted Ashoka ever since she learned of his transformation into Darth Vader. Will she finally get closure? Could we see Hayden Christenson in some capacity? And why does it sound like Skoll was on such friendly terms with Anakain?
Where is Ezra?
While the new Ahsoka trailer gave us a glimpse of Lars Markkadin as Grand Admiral Thrawn, it did not give any hints about the whereabouts of Ezra Bridger.
The last time we saw the young Jedi he was launching himself and Trawn (via purrgil) into parts unknown in order to stop the Grand Admiral.
In the trailer, Sabine watches the message that Ezra left his Rebels family before sacrificing himself. But the question remains if Thrawn is returning, where is Ezra?
Ahsoka will stream exclusively on Disney+ on August 23.
