Upperdeck Responds To Ravensburger’s Motion To Dismiss Lorcana Lawsuit
The ongoing battle between trading card companies Upper Deck and Ravensburger over the upcoming Disney Lorcana trading card game continued this week.
In June 2023, Upper Deck filed a lawsuit against designer Ryan Miller and Ravensburger arguing that Miller stole Upper Deck’s concept for an unreleased game called Rush of Ikorr to help create Lorcana at Ravensburger.
Ravensburger’s Motion To Dismiss
On July 13, Ravensburger filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit. In their motion, the company argued taht the court lacked jurisdiction to rule on the complaint. Ravensburger’s Legal Advisor Brian Lewis then stated that the lawsuit was more of a “PR stunt than a genuine legal dispute.”
In response to Ravensburger’s motion to dismiss, Upper Deck released a statement saying that Ravensburger had failed to address the main issue at hand.
Upper Deck Responds
“Ravensburger’s attempted dismissal fails to address Upper Deck’s merited lawsuit to protect Upper Deck’s intellectual property. This is a strategic deflection of our core allegations. We will continue to prosecute this case to enforce our rights and to ensure fair play within the gaming community,” the company said.
Ravensburger’s motion will be ruled on August 14, 2023. Before that happens, however, Disney’s Lorcana is set to launch at Gen Con on August 5, 2023.
Ravensburger and Disney have previously stated that the lawsuit will not impact that game’s launch date.
