‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ Manages $82 Million Through The 4th of July
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny fell in line with estimates, bringing in $82 million through the Fourth of July holiday.
That number would be a solid total for an action-adventure film aimed at older audiences, however, there is one lingering issue. Dial of Destiny carries an astronomical $295 million budget, meaning that it will likely be unable to recoup its budget during its box office run.
The film has also struggled overseas, where it debuted to a $70 million opening.
While Dial of Destiny was given a slight boost from the Fourth of July, unlike other holidays, Independence Day is not traditionally a big box office booster. Instead of going to theaters, families tend to enjoy the outdoor festivities that accompany the holiday. Studios typically look to the slower days around the 4th to boost their films.
Competition on the Horizon
With Oppenheimer and Mission: Impossible 7 on the horizon, Indiana Jones will soon have more competition. While the film’s numbers aren’t bad, they are also likely not the heroic sendoff Disney was hoping for.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny sees Harrison Ford don his iconic fedora for one last adventure. Although on the cusp of retirement, Indiana is drawn back into the field when he teams up with his goddaughter to find an artifact that could change the course of history. In addition to Ford, the film stars Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Mads Mikkelsen.
Unlike the previous four installments in the franchise, Dial of Destiny is helmed by James Mangold. Steven Spielberg left the film during development.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is in theaters now.
