June 27th was a busy day in Disney history, with the opening of a new Disneyland attraction, the release of a new animated film, and the premiere of a Disney Channel Original Series. So, let’s get started!
Who Killed Cock Robin Premieres (1935)
On this day in 1935, the Silly Symphony cartoon Who Killed Cock Robin? premiered.
The cartoon was based on the nursery rhyme that ends with Cupid saying, “I shot Cock Robin, but Robin isn’t dead. He fell for little Jenny Wren and landed on his head.”
Teachers Are People Released (1952)
On this day in 1952, the Goofy short Teachers are People was released.
In the cartoon, Goofy tries to teach a classroom full of young troublemakers.
The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again Released (1979)
On this day in 1979, The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again was released.
A sequel to 1975’s The Apple Dumpling Gang, the film centered on two bumbling outlaw wannabees. The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again starred Tim Conway, Don Knotts, and Harry Morgan.
Disney and MGM Reach Agreement (1985)
On this day in 1985, Disney and MGM signed a 20-year agreement giving Disney the exclusive rights to use most of MGM’s movies.
The agreement would be the foundation of the soon-to-be-built Disney-MGM Studios.
Mickey’s Mart Closes (1991)
On this day in 1991, Mickey’s Mart closed in Tomorrowland.
The store would later be known as Mickey’s Star Trader.
Hercules Released (1997)
On this day in 1997, Hercules was released.
Disney’s 35th animated film, Hercules was based on the legendary Greek mythological hero.
You Lucky Dog Airs (1998)
On this day in 1998, the Disney Channel Original Movie You Lucky Dog aired.
In the film, a dog psychiatrist discovers a psychic connection between himself and a depressed dog named Lucky, whose owner recently passed way. Lucky inherits his owner’s money on the condition that the psychiatrist lives with him.
WALL-E Released (2008)
On this day in 2008, WALL-E was released.
The nearly silent film told the story of the last robot on Earth, who spends his days tidying up the planet one piece of garbage at a time.
D23 Walt Disney Studios & Archive Tour Held (2009)
On this day in 2009, the first-ever D23 Walt Disney Studios & Archive Tour was held.
The special event let guests tour the normally off-limits Disney archives.
Disney Studio 365 Opens (2009)
Also on this day in 2009, Disney Studio 365 opened at Disneyland’s Downtown Disney.
The boutique gave guests a Disney Channel-esque makeover complete with a photo shoot.
My Babysitter’s A Vampire Aired (2011)
On this day in 2011, My Babysitter’s a Vampire aired on the Disney Channel.
The television series followed the adventures of a young teenage boy who learns that his babysitter is a vampire.
Girl Meets World Debuts (2014)
On this day in 2014, Girl Meets World debuted on the Disney Channel.
The show was a spinoff of the popular 1990s sitcom Boy Meets World and starred Ben Savage, Danielle Fishel, Sabrina Carpenter, and Rowan Blanchard.
Zapped Aired (2014)
Also on this day in 2014, the Disney Channel Original Movie Zapped aired.
The film starred Zendaya as Zoey, a bright teenage girl going through changes, who finds a phone app that magically allows her to control boys.
Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind Opens (2019)
Finally, on this day in 2019, Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind had a soft opening at Disneyland.
The spinner attraction is an updated version of the Flik’s Flyers, where guests board one of eight Memory Makers and sort through Riley’s memories.
