The morning started better than most, what with one of our writing cadre asking excitedly, “There’s a movie about a red panda?!”
And then all of us scrambling to check out the new poster and watch the new teaser trailer for Pixar’s Turning Red.

The best thing about the incredibly cute first look at Mei Lee and her alter ego, especially for us parents, is that we can see both sides of the story.

Firstly, the synopsis for the video reads:
Growing up is a beast. Check out the new trailer for the upcoming all-new original feature film “Turning Red” from Pixar Animation Studios’ director Domee Shi, who won an Oscar® for her 2018 short film, “Bao.” Young actress Rosalie Chiang lends her voice to Mei Lee, a 13-year-old who suddenly “poofs” into a giant red panda when she gets too excited (which is practically ALWAYS). Sandra Oh voices Mei Lee’s protective, if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming, who is never far from her daughter—an unfortunate reality for the teenager. Directed by Shi and produced by Lindsey Collins, Disney and Pixar’s “Turning Red” releases March 11, 2022.

New Trailer
“Turning Red is the next film from Pixar Animation Studios, and besides a brief look shared during Disney’s Investor Day in December 2020, we’ve not been shown much about the film,” wrote Jordan Simmons, who posted the short clip below:
“This is Mei, confident 13-year-old, who is experiencing the excruciating awkwardness of being a teenager,” said Pixar head Pete Docter during Disney’s 2020 Investor Day. “Everything in her life is changing. Her interests. Relationships. Her body. Balancing all of this with family, her crushes, and her devotion to the biggest boy band on the planet is no small feat.
“Oh, and one more little detail,” added Mr. Docter. “Whenever she gets excited… she uncontrollably poofs int a giant red panda; kind of like the incredible hulk, but cuter.”
