What We Know So Far About Pixar’s Upcoming Feature ‘Turning Red’
Here at MickeyBlog HQ, we love a good Pixar film. That’s why one of the announcements made during Disney’s Investors Day on Thursday has us mighty excited. Along with an incredible line up of Disney+ shows is what sounds like an adorable film from Pixar story artist Domee Shi who gave us the beloved Pixar Short Bao.
This short debuted before Incredibles 2 and won the Academy Award for best Animated Short marking the first time a woman of color had taken home the Oscar in that category. So we knew whatever Domee Shi worked on next would be “Big” and we were right!
Pixar announced that Shi will be working on a debut feature called Turning Red which is schedule for release on March 11, 2022 and though it feels like ages away, some things are worth waiting for as the concept for this film is equally as adorable as Bao.
Director of the Academy Award-winning short Bao, Domee Shi, brings us Turning Red. Meet Mei: she experiences the awkwardness of being a teenager, with an added twist: when she gets too excited, she transforms into a giant red panda. Its very early days for the project so not much as been revealed about casting or creative teams but Pete Docter did share a few insights during the Investors Day broadcast. As you can see from the tweet above sent out during the event the synopsis reads, “Meet Mei: she experiences the awkwardness of being a teenager, with an added twist: when she gets too excited, she transforms into a giant red panda.”

As you can see from the image above Shi took to Instagram to announce the project saying, : “Puberty! Asians! Red Pandas!” We think this is such a delightful way to discuss a topic in a new way that preteens have been looking for since Judy Blume wrote, Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret.
Not only will the film undoubtedly be historic in terms of subject matter but it will also have the distinction of being the FIRST Pixar film directed by a woman! As Collider reminds us, Brenda Champan was directing Brave but was removed from the project back in 2012.
You can be that we’ll be following details regarding this project closely! Readers are encouraged to keep checking in with us for further news and updates!
