Welcome back to our magical trip through Disney’s past. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- June 21.
June 21st was a massive day in Disney history, with the release of multiple animated classics, the opening of an EPCOT attraction, and the premiere of a new Pixar film. So, let’s get going!
The Parent Trap Released (1961)
On this day in 1961, Disney’s The Parent Trap was released.
The film starred Hayley Mills as twins Sharon and Susan, who are reunited after years of being separated by their divorced parents.
Return to Oz Released (1985)
On this day in 1985, Return to Oz was released.
The film combined the plot of the L. Frank Baum novels Ozma of Oz and The Marvelous Land of Oz. It was an unofficial sequel to the original 1939 film.
Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Premieres (1988)
On this day in 1988, Who Framed Roger Rabit premiered at Radio City Music Hall.
The film told the story of a private detective played by Bob Hoskins, who investigates a murder involving the famous cartoon character, Roger Rabbit.
The film brought together animated characters from Disney, Universal, MGM, Republic, Turner Entertainment, and Warner Bros. It also marked the first onscreen pairing of Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny.
The Rocketeer Released (1991)
On this day in 1991, The Rocketeer was released.
In the film, a young pilot stumbles onto a prototype jetpack that allows him to become a high-flying masked hero. The film starred Bill Campbell, Jennifer Connelly, Alan Arkin, and Timothy Dalton.\
Tokyo’s Main Street Electrical Parade Ends (1995)
On this day in 1995, Tokyo Disneyland’s Main Street Electrical Parade ended its run.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame Released (1996)
On this day in 1996, Disney released The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Based on the Victor Hugo novel, the film starred Jason Alexander, Tom Hulce, Demi Moore, and Kevin Kline.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame- A Musical Adventure Opens (1996)
Also on this day in 1996, The Hunchback of Notre Dame- A Musical Adventure debuted at the Disney-MGM Studios.
The live stage show told the story of the Disney animated film. It would run through September 2002.
DisneyQuest Unveils New Attractions (2000)
On this day in 2000, DisneyQuest unveiled two new attractions at Walt Disney World.
Both Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for Buccaneer Gold and Songmaker were now housed within the interactive theme park.
Lilo and Stitch Released (2002)
On this day in 2002, Lilo and Stitch opened in theaters.
The film told the story of a young Hawaiian girl who adopts an unusual pet that turns out to be a fugitive alien.
WALL-E Premieres (2008)
On this day in 2008, WALL-E premiered in Los Angels.
Pixar’s newest film told the story of a small waste-collecting robot who accidentally embarks on a journey that will decide the fate of mankind.
Monsters University Released (2013)
On this day in 2013, Monsters University was released to theaters.
A prequel to the 2001 film Monsters Inc., the film looked at the relationship between Mike and Sulley during their college days at Monsters University.
Frozen Ever After Opens (2016)
On this day in 2016, Frozen Ever After opened at Walt Disney World.
The new attraction replaced the popular Maelstrom attraction in EPCOT’s Norway pavilion.
Toy Story 4 Released (2019)
Finally, on this day in 2019, Toy Story 4 was released in theaters.
The film continued the story of Sherrif Wood and Buzz Lightyear, along with their other toy friends who now belong to Bonnie.
