Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground Gets an Unusual Guest

Baloo is that you? For anyone that’s ever had the pleasure of staying at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground, you’ll know that the name says it all. Located in the middle of a massive Cyprus forest, guests staying at the cabins or the campsites regularly see an array of wildlife. On my last visit there we saw deer, raccoons, possums, snakes, and the occasional gator! However, a recent guest at Fort Wilderness managed to capture a photo of a guest we don’t see very often – A BEAR!

No laughing matter! #OBX doesn’t have all the bears, so does @WaltDisneyWorld. A Fort Wilderness guest Monique spotted this one today in the 1700 loop/Hickory Hollow at Fort Wilderness! pic.twitter.com/Mtt9zbuf5v

This looks like a scene straight out of The Jungle Book or Brother Bear but in reality, is a Florida Black Bear making the rounds at this popular Disney resort. The Florida Black Bear lives mainly in forested areas which are being drastically reduced due to deforestation. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission regularly publishes resources on the Florida Black Bear and what to do should you come in contact with one.
You can check out the infographic below:
The key takeaway here is that if bears can’t find food, they will move on. Therefore, if you’re lucky enough to be spending some time in the wilderness around Walt Disney World “bear” in mind:
- Feeding Bears is Illegal
- Secure garbage, pet food, and birdseed
- Secure Livestock with electric fencing
- Be aware of your surroundings and walk dogs on a short leash
Use common sense, dear readers! Though Disney cartoons are filled with humanlike animal friends, the inhabitants at Fort Wilderness are not one of them! Don’t be this guy who in an unrelated incident thought a wild warthog approaching was as friendly as Pumbaa from The Lion King.
