Sarah Polley Is In Talks To Direct A Live-Action ‘Bambi’
Following the modest return that Disney’s The Little Mermaid live-action remake brought back from the box office, there had been speculation that perhaps Disney would shy away from releasing more remakes.
While Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and The Lion King were undeniable box office successes, for a myriad of reasons Disney’s latest offerings have not fared as well. Dumbo, Pinocchio, and Mulan all struggled to connect with audiences, while The Little Mermaid dominated the domestic box office but floundered overseas.
Well, it seems that reports of Disney’s hesitancy have been overblown, as today, Deadline is reporting that filmmaker Sarah Polley is in talks to direct a live-action take on Bambi.
Polley, who is coming off a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for Women Talking, would join other celebrated directors including Jon Favreau, Kenneth Branagh, Niki Caro, Guy Ritchie, and Tim Burton in helming a Disney live-action remake.
Here Comes Bambi
Disney first signaled its intention to adapt Bambi for live-action back in early 2020. At the time, the studio brought in Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Lindsey Beer as writers and Depth of Field to produce.
Currently, however, there is no word on any writer or producer attached to the project, or when production could begin in earnest. Almost all of Hollywood is shut down due to the ongoing WGA strike.
Released in 1942, Bambi is widely considered to be an animated classic. The coming-of-age story of a young deer struck by tragedy grossed over $267 million worldwide during its initial release. The film has continued to entertain, and sometimes traumatize, viewers for generations.
