This Day in Disney History- June 11
Welcome back to our continuing trip trough the Walt Disney Company’s past. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- June 11.
June 11th featured the premiere of a debut Walt Disney World parade, the opening of a Disney California Adventure attraction, and the premiere of a Pixar blockbuster. So, let’s get started!
Sky Scrappers Released (1928)
On this day in 1928, the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit short Sky Scrappers was released.
The Sign of Zorro Released (1960)
On this day in 1960, The Sign of Zorro was released.
Starring Guy Williams, the film told the story of Zorro’s return home, which has fallen under the heel of a cruel dictator, Captain Monastario.
The Main Street Electrical Parade Debuts (1977)
On this day in 1977, Walt Disney World’s version of the Main Street Electrical Parade debuted.
Created by Bob Jai and director Ron Miziker, the parade featured thousands of electronically-controlled lights and a synchronized soundtrack. The Main Street Electrical Parade would run until September 1992, when it was replaced by SpectroMagic.
Refreshment Outpost Opens (1982)
On this day in 1982, the Refreshment Outpost snack bar opened in EPCOT Center’s World Showcase.
Disneyland’s Motor Boat Cruise Closes (1993)
On this day in 1993, Disneyland’s Motor Boat Cruise closed.
The attraction, which was located between Tomorrowland and Fantasyland, had been open since 1993.
Jack Hannah Passes Away (1994)
On this day in 1994, director, writer, and animator Jack Hannah passed away at age 91.
Hannah began his career with Disney in 1933, and would eventual direct over 94 Disney animated shorts, often featuring Donald Duck.
Zenon: Z3 Premieres (2004)
On this day in 2004, the Disney Channel Original Movie Zenon: Z3 premiered.
The second sequel to 1999’s Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century, the film starred Kirsten Storms as the eponymous heroine.
Finding Nemo: Submarine Voyage Opens (2007)
On this day in 2007, Disneyland’s Finding Nemo: Submarine Voyage opened to the general public.
The attraction was a Nemo-infused update of the original Disneyland Submarine Voyage.
World of Color Debuts (2010)
On this day in 2010, World of Color debuted at Disney California Adventure.
The new nighttime spectacular used water and special effects to bring Disney characters to life.
Silly Symphony Swings Opens (2010)
Also on this day in 2010, Silly Symphony Swings opened at Disney California Adventure.
The “wave swinger” attraction was themed after Disney’s The Band Concert.
Get a Horse! Released (2013)
On this day in 2013, the Disney animated short Get a Horse! was released.
The cartoon combined black-and-white hand drawn animation with CGI animation. Get a Horse! was also the first Mickey Mouse cartoon since 1995, and the first Disney Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoon in 85 years!
Frozen Festival Show Opens (2015)
On this day in 2015, the Frozen Festival Show debuted at Hong Kong Disneyland.
The musical show was almost identical to For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-A-Long Celebration.
Hong Kong Disneyland’s Autopia Closes (2016)
On this day in 2016, Hong Kong Disneyland’s Autopia closed.
The Tomorrowland attraction had been open since July 2006.
Toy Story 4 Premieres (2019)
On this day in 2019, Toy Story 4 had its world premiere at the El Capitan Theatre.
On hand for the festivities were film stars, Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Annie Potts, Keegan-Michael Kay, and Keanu Reeves.
Season 2 of Zenimation Debuts (2021)
On this day in 2021, the second season of Zenimation aired on Disney+.
The anthology series was “a tribute to the visual and sound artists who have helped create Walt Disney Animation Studios’ legacy of films”.
