Josh D’Amaro Says Disney Has No Interest In Regional Parks
One of the more interesting developments in the theme park industry was Universal’s announcement earlier this year that the company would be building two new mini theme parks in Frisco, Texas and Las Vegas, Nevada.
These new properties will be smaller than Universal’s traditional theme parks but still offer high-quality entertainment and attractions.
The bigger of the two projects will be the park coming to Frisco, Texas, and it will be dedicated to young families.
This new park will be scaled small for younger children but still feature major attractions, meet and greets, themed dining, and entertainment.
While no opening timeframe has been set for either park, Universal’s move into regional attractions has left many wondering whether or not Disney will follow suit.
Disney Has Explored Regional Parks In The Past
Throughout its history, Disney has considered creating smaller regional parks. These plans date back to Walt Disney’s Mineral King Ski Resort, or later, Disney’s America in Virginia.
Even DisneyQuest was seen as a way to bring Disney attractions closer to people’s homes.
While many Disney fans would surely be thrilled to have a smaller Disney Park close to home, the idea of regional attractions does not seem to be on Disney’s radar.
Josh D’Amaro Speaks
At the JP Morgan Global Technology, Media and Communications Conference, Disney Parks, Resorts, and Experinces Chairman Josh D’Amaro was asked whether Disney could follow in Universal’s footsteps. When questioned whether the prospect of regional parks was interesting to Disney, D’Amaro quickly shot down the idea.
“I think it must be interesting for them. For us, we think that focusing on our core assets is where we should be spending most of our opportunity. As I said earlier, we think that there’s so much potential there. That’s where we’re continuing to focus our efforts.”
So, that about does it, I wouldn’t expect Disney to look into regional parks anytime soon. Instead, they are focused on continuing to build out their existing properties.
