Ahsoka’s Mary Elizabeth Winstead On Bringing Hera to Live-Action
The upcoming Star Wars series Ahsoka will serve as a continuation of a story that began in the Star Wars: Rebels animated series.
The fan-favorite show introduced fans to a bevy of fan-favorite characters who will soon make the jump to live-action. These include Sabine Wren, Ezra Bridger, and Hera Syndulla.
For four seasons, fans watched the Ghost crew fight the Galactic Empire. They eventually even managed to free the Imperial-occupied planet of Lothal from the grips of Grand Admiral Thrawn.
Continuing Hera’s Rebels Story
For actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who is set to assume the role of Hera in Ahasoka, having Rebels to lean into helped her to understand her character.
“Having a character who’s already existed and has such a rich history on something like Rebels, as an actor, it’s incredible,” Winstead told Dagobah Dispatch. “Because sometimes we’re tasked with creating our own backstories or trying to flesh out a character that doesn’t really have that much on the page. And so to play a character that has season after season of storylines. And complex histories with everyone in their life and relationships and experiences was really something I’ve never experienced quite like that.”
How Hera Has Changed
Now, that the Empire has fallen, fans have wondered how Hera and the rest of the Ghost crew would adapt to a galaxy under the purview of the New Republic. According to Winstead, Hera continues to be the heroic leader she was in Rebels.
“I see Hera as an incredibly strong but complicated person,” Winstead says. “She is very maternal, but also she’s this leader of this crew. And as we see, she continues and becomes a general. And so she’s leading quite a lot of people and she’s become something of a legend in her own right.”
A Role Model
While she may not be perfect, Winstead sees Hera as something of a role model, who is both a leader in battle and a solace for those around her.
“She’s certainly not perfect. But she does have all of those qualities that make her somebody that you can really look up to in a way. And I like to try to be that on film. I don’t know that I quite live up to it in reality. But it’s someone to try and try and reach for.”
For fans who followed the Ghost crew’s battle with the Empire, Ahsoka cannot come soon enough. The show is expected to debut on Disney+ in August.
