Auli’i Cravalho Will Not Reprise Her Role of Moana In The Live-Action Remake
When Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson announced that Disney would be creating a live-action Moana movie, speculation began that Auli’i Cravalho, who voiced the titular character in the animated film, would reprise her role.
Even by Disney’s standards, remaking a film that is less than seven years old seemed like a fast turnaround. Disney fans immediately wondered if the remake was being fast-tracked to allow Cravalho a chance to portray Moana in live-action.
Cravalho Will Not Play Moana
In an Instagram post today however, Auli’i Cravalho announced that while she will not be reprising her role as Moana, she will be joining the film an an executive producer.
“When I was cast as Moana at 14, it wonderfully changed my life and started my career,” she stated. “In this live-action retelling, I will not be reprising the role. I believe it is absolutely vital that casting accurately represents the characters and stories we want to tell.”
While fans may be disappointed to hear that Cravalho will not be in the upcoming film, the actress stated that she is looking forward to finding the “next actress to portray Moana’s courageous spirit, undeniable wit and emotional strength”.
A Busy Future
As of this writing the only official cast member of the upcoming Moana remake is Johnson, who will reprise his role as Maui.
Cravalho, for her part, has no shortage of work. The actress will make her West End debut in the tile role of Evita this summer. She will also portray Janis in the upcoming movie musical adaptation of Mean Girls.
