This Day in Disney History- May 18
Welcome back to our continuing journey through the history of the Walt Disney Company. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- May 18.
May 18th featured a new investment for Disney, the closure of a Disney’s Hollywood Studios attraction, and also the premiere of two new Pixar films. So, let’s get started!
Plutopia Released (1951)
On this day in 1951, the Mickey Mouse cartoon Plutopia was released.
In the cartoon, Mickey takes a vacation to Camp Utopia. With trees everywhere and a cat to chase, Pluto is heaven.
Fuzzbucket Airs (1986)
On this day in 1986, Disney’s Fuzzbucket aired.
In the movie, an invisible creature befriends lonely 12-year-old Chris Hebert.
Disney Buys A Stake in the Angels (1995)
On this day in 1995, Disney bought a 25% interest in the California Angles.
Majority owner Gene Autry was happy with Disney’s investment saying, “I could not be more pleased that the company that bears my friend Walt Disney’s name and that is also dedicated to the creation of family entertainment is now a part of the Angels organization.”
Finding Nemo Premierse (2003)
On this day in 2003, Finding Nemo premiered in Hollywood, California.
The movie was written by Andrew Stanton and directed by Station and Lee Unkrich. Finding Nemo tells the story of an over-protective clownfish named Marlin who searches for his missing son Nemo.
Wireless Hotspots Added to Pirates of the Caribbean (2007)
On this day in 2007, ten wireless hot spots were added inside Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.
Guests with a Nintendo DS and the game Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End could download extra content on those hot spots which was not available anywhere else.
Sounds Dangerous Closes (2012)
On this day in 2012, Sounds Dangerous! closed at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Starring Drew Carey, the audio show had been running since April 1999.
Inside Out Premiers (2015)
On this day in 2015, Pixar’s Inside Out premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.
The film is set inside the mind of a young girl named Riley, where five emotions (Joy, Anger, Disgust, Fear, and Sadness) try to lead her through life.
Black Tap Craft Burgers and Shakes Opens (2019)
On this day in 2019, Black Tap Craft Burgers and Shakes opened at Downtown Disney in Anaheim.
On hand for the festivities were Vanessa Hudgens, Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and Chef Goofy.
Josh D’Amaro Named Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products (2020)
On this day in 2020, Josh D’Amaro was named chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products.
D’Amaro took over the role from then-CEO Bob Chapek.
Cruella Premieres (2021)
Finally, on this day in 2021, Cruella had its world premiere.
On hand for the festivities were stars Emma Stone and Kirby Howell-Baptiste. Cruella was the first Disney premiere since the COVID-19 pandemic.
