ESPN Braces For Incoming Layoffs
As the Walt Disney Company is set to begin its second wave of company-wide layoffs, ESPN employees are bracing for impact.
Layoffs at the Worldwide Leader in Sports will begin early next week, and Disney looks to cut 7,000 jobs across every division of the company.
For ESPN, cuts will include on-air talent and management.
While the network is expected to be hit hard in the next round of layoffs, the number of jobs cut and the roles being downsized are still unclear.
According to insiders, the decision process is still fluid.
Here Comes Round Two
The sports network was largely left out of the first round of Disney’s companywide cuts that saw Disney axe its metaverse strategies unit, Marvel Entertainment, and part of its Beijing office among other cuts.
For ESPN, the cuts come at a time when the network is working on renewing its contract that the National Basketball Association.
7,000 Total Layoffs
Disney’s 7,000 layoffs were originally announced in February by Disney CEO Bob Iger. The job cuts were part of a company-wide strategy to shed nearly $5.5 billion in debt.
“We have made the difficult decision to reduce our overall workforce by approximately 7,000 jobs as part of a strategic realignment of the company. Including important cost-saving measures necessary for creating a more effective, coordinated, and streamlined approach to our business,” Iger said at the time.
The last time that ESPN was hit by widespread layoffs was in 2020 when 300 employees were let go.
