This Day in Disney History- April 15
Welcome back to our continuing journey through the history of the Walt Disney Company. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- April 15.
April 15th was a huge day in Disney history with the opening of Tokyo Disneyland, a slew of attraction openings, and the release of a Disney live-action film. So, let’s get going.
Barnyard Olympics Released (1932)
On this day in 1932, the Mickey Mouse short Barnyard Olympics was released.
Released to coincide with the opening of the 1932 Olympic Games, the cartoon featured Mickey competing with Pete.
Donald’s Nephews Released (1938)
On this day in 1938, the Donald Duck cartoon Donald’s Nephews was released.
Written by Carl Barks, the short was the first apperance of Huey, Dewey and Louie.
The Walt Disney Story Opens (1973)
On this day in 1973, The Walt Disney Story opened in Walt Disney World.
The free attraction was a documentary about the life of Walt Disney, and narrated by the man himself.
Flight to the Moon Closes (1975)
On this day in 1975, Flight to the Moon closed in Walt Disney World.
The attraction was replaced by Mission to Mars.
Tokyo Disneyland Opens (1983)
On this day in 1983, Tokyo Disneyland opened.
Disney’s fourth theme park, the park was made up of six lands- Adventureland, Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, Westernland, and World Bazaar.
Among the opening day attractions included Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Jets, Snow White’s Adventures, Pinocchio’s Daring Journey, the Haunted Mansion, Country Bear Jamboree, and Space Mountain.
Tokyo Disneyland Attractions Opens (1990)
On this day in 1990, The Visionarium, Disney Gallery, Mickey’s Moderne Memories shop and The Sweetheart Cafe opened.
The new attractions, shops, and restaurant opened in celebration of the park’s 10th anniversary.
Toontown Attractions Open In Tokyo (1996)
On this day in 1996, Mickey’s House, Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin, and Gadget’s Go Coaster all opened at Tokyo Disneyland.
The attraction’s opened as part of the park’s 13 anniversary.
Toontown Attractions Open in Walt Disney World (1996)
Also on this day in 1996, Donald’s Boat and Minnie’s Country House opened at Walt Disney World.
The interactive playground and self-guided tour opened in Mickey’s Toontown Fair. Both attractions closed in February 2011.
MicroAdventure! Opens (1997)
On this day in 1997, MicroAdventure! opened in Tokyo Disneyland.
A version of Honey, I Shrunk the Audience, the 4D film was based on the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids film series.
Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blaster Opens (2004)
On this day in 2004, Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters opened in Tokyo Disneyland.
Similar to Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, the video-game-inspired attraction was based on Toy Story 2.
Disney’s Rock Around the Mouse Opens (2005)
On this day in 2005, Disney’s Rock Around the Mouse opened in Tokyo Disneyland.
The show was a live musical tribute to the Disney of the 1950s.
Ariel’s Greeting Grotto Opens (2005)
On this day in 2005, Ariel’s Greeting Grotto a character meet-and-greet attraction opened in Tokyo DisneySea.
The attraction allowed guests to enter Ariel’s Grotto and meet the mermaid face to face.
Monsters, Inc. Ride & Go Seek Opened (2009)
On this day in 2009, Monsters, Inc. Ride & Go Seek opened at Tokyo Disneyland.
The interactive dark ride was based on the 2001 Disney-Pixar film Monsters, Inc.
Lemonade Mouth Opens (2011)
On this day in 2011, the Disney Channel Original Movie Lemonade Mouth premiered.
The film told the story of five high school teens who meet in detention and ultimately form a band.
Tokyo Disney Resort Celebrates 30th Anniversary (2013)
On this day in 2013, Tokyo Disney Resort celebrated its 30th anniversary.
The theme of the celebration was “The Happiness Year” and featured a new live show and parade.
The Jungle Book Hits Theaters (2016)
On this day in 2016, The Jungle Book opened in theaters.
The live-action remake of Disney’s animated classic was directed by Jon Favreau.
