Kathleen Kennedy Gives Update On Rian Johnson’s Star Wars Trilogy
Rian Johnson’s Star Wars film The Last Jedi continues to be one of the most divisive films in the franchise’s history.
While many online commenters have bemoaned the film, and its portrayal of Luke Skywalker, others have hailed it as the pinnacle of the sequel trilogy.
A Rian Johnson Trilogy
Prior to the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi in 2017, Lucasfilm announced that Johnson and producer Ram Bergam would be creating a new Star Wars trilogy separate from the Skywalker saga.
It was then announced that the saga would “introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored”.
In the subsequent years howeer, Rian Johnson’s return to a galaxy far, far away, seems to have stalled.
Last May, it was announced that Johnson’s prior commitments caused the project to be put on hold.
Then, in November, Jonson addressed the future of the Star Wars saga, noting that he was still in talks with Lucasfilm. He also made it clear that he wanted to return.

The Latest Update
At Star Wars Celebration 2023, Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy gave fans an update on the Rian Johnson trilogy.

“Rian and I talk all the time. He is unbelievably busy.” Kennedy said. “So we’re not actively involved in anything at the moment because he’s doing another one of the Glass Onion movies and then God knows what else. But he really wants to step back into the space. It’s a big commitment of time, so that’s really on him.”
While it doesn’t sound like Johnson’s next Star Wars foray will arrive anytime soon, the door is clearly open.

It is also interesting that the divided fan reaction to The Last Jedi has not deterred Lucasfilm from handing the franchise back to the director.
While we will likely have to wait until the end of the Glass Onion series before Johnson tackles Star Wars again, never say never.
