Star Wars: Rian Johnson’s Trilogy “Is Still On”
USA Today’s Sariah Wilson reports Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy “is happening.”
It’s been almost a day since I first saw Sariah Wilson’s tweet. And I don’t think I could be more excited.
The USA Today writer posted:
I'm just going to post this now because I can see that I'm going to get a lot of requests –
Yes, Rian's SW trilogy is still on. No dates or timelines because he has other projects going on, but it is happening.
THAT IS ALL I KNOW ABOUT IT. 😁😁😁

Here is where I rejoice (and a whole bunch of folks freak out).
Rian Johnson is one of my favorite creatives. I appreciated his take on Luke Skywalker (and his giving Luke the heroic and Obi-Wan-like end) that allowed Rey to be the “Luke” of her trilogy.
However, I would like to see Johnson have more room to develop a saga of his own.
I can hear some grumbles from the back. And, I will submit, that — and I am not gatekeeping here, just delivering facts — back in the day, The Empire Strikes Back was JUST AS DEVISIVE. Go find a “Starlog” from the time and you will see what I mean.
And for the love of Mike, did you see Knives Out? Seriously.
That written, I happy to concur with David Thompson’s note in The Direct:
Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy was first officially announced during a 2017 Disney quarterly shareholder meeting. After the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which became one of the most controversial Star Wars films ever, the news around a Johnson led trilogy has gone quiet. Despite no official confirmation from Disney, it appears The Last Jedi will not be Johnson’s one and only Star Wars flick.
Boom!
I can already see the crawl….
