Welcome back to our continuing journey through Disney’s past. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- April 5.
April 5th was a huge day for the Disney Parks, with Disneyland’s 50th anniversary kicking off, a new attraction opening in Epcot, and also the latest Marvel release.
Disney Introduces the Disney Dollars (1987)
On this day in 1987, Disneyland introduced the Disney Dollars.
The exclusive line of currency featured Mickey Mouse on the $1 bill and Goofy on the $5.
The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror Opens in California (2004)
On this day in 2004, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror officially opened in Disney’s California Adventure.
Inspired by Rod Sterling’s anthology series “The Twilight Zone”, the attraction was a smaller version of the Walt Disney World ride. It would eventually close in 2016.
Disney Announces The Happiest Homecoming on Earth (2004)
Also on this day in 2004, Disney announced that Disneyland’s 50th anniversary would be celebrated with “The Happiest Homecoming on Earth”.
As part of the celebration new shows and attractions debuted at all 10 Disney theme parks. The celebration started in 2005.
Disneyland’s 50th Anniversary Begins (2005)
On this day in 2005, Disneyland’s 50th Anniversary kicked off.
At this time, Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters, Wald Disney’s Parade of Dreams, and Drams Come True all debuted.
Soarin’ Opens in Epcot (2005)
Also on this day in 2005, Soarin’ Over California opened in Epcot.
Based on the attraction at DIsney’s California Adventure, Soarin’ took guests on a hang gliding tour over California.
Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show Opens (2005)
Also on this day in 2005, Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show opened in the DIsney-MGM Studios.
Imported from Paris, the attraction featured 40 minutes of stunts, pyrotechnics and jet ski chases.
Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Debuts (2006)
On this day in 2006, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse debuted on the Disney Channel.
The first Mickey Mouse series created specifically for preschoolers, the show would run until 2016.
Disney Completes Its Purchase of Pixar (2006)
Also on this day in 2006, Disney’s acquisition of Pixar Animation Studios was completed.
The studio is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Walt Disney Company.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Released (2017)
On this day in 2017, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was released in theaters.
The second installment in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, the movie brought Peter Quill face to face with his father, Ego the Living Planet.
