This Day In Disney History March 18
Welcome back to our continuing journey through the history of the Walt Disney Company. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- March 18.
March 18th featured a historic groundbreaking, the opening of a Disneyland classic, and also the retirement of an animation legend. So, let’s get started!
Mickey’s Mellerdrammer Released (1933)
On this day in 1933, the Mickey Mouse short Mickey’s Mellerdrammer was released.
In the cartoon Mickey and friends put on a production of Uncle Tom’s Cabin.
Disneyland Hotel Groundbreaking Held (1955)
On this day in 1955, a ground breaking ceremony took place in Anaheim California for the Disneyland Hotel.
Among those in attendance were Roy Disney, Disneyland vice-president C.V. Wood, and Anaheim Mayor Charles Pearson.
Pirates of the Caribbean Opens in Disneyland (1967)
On this day in 1967, Pirates of the Caribbean opened in New Orleans Square.
The classic Disneyland attraction tells a morality tale of a group of pirates who ransack a town but are captured after getting too drunk.
Alley Cats Strike! Released (2000)
On this day in 2000, the Disney Channel original movie Alley Cats Strike! was released.
The film starred a cool teenager who gets involved in a inter-school bowling rivalry.
Spy Kids Premiere Held (2001)
On this day in 2001, the first ever digitally transmitted feature film premiere took place at Disney’s California Adventure for Spy Kids.
Prior to the premiere, park visitors were treated to a parade featuring several of the Spy Kids stars.
Orlando Ferrante Gets Main Street Window (2003)
On this day in 2003, Imagineering legend Orlando Ferrante received a window on Disneyland’s Main Street USA.
I pioneer in Audio-Animatronic technology, Orlando worked on attractions including The Enchanted Tiki Room, Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean and it’s a small world.
Ice Princess Released (2005)
On this day in 2005, Disney released Ice Princess.
The film starred Michelle Trachtenberg as a teen who dreams of being a champion ice skater.
John Musker Retires (2018)
Finally, on this day in 2018, animator John Musker retired.
Musker is best remembered for his work with Ron Clements where he co-wrote and directed seven films including The Little Mermaid Aladdin and Moana.
