Florida Disney Workers Union Rejects Company’s Latest Proposal
One of the largest Florida Disney workers unions voted a reject a contract offer from the company.
On Friday the Service Trades Council Union, which represents 45,000 workers, rejected Disney’s offer to give Cast Members an immediate $1 raise.
“Disney proposed raises of $1 a year for most workers, but $1 is not enough,” the union announced. “This leaves behind over 30,000 Cast Members struggling with the cost of living in Central Florida.”
The union’s response to the offer was strong, as 96% of union members voted to oppose the offer.
Disney Responds
Disney officials responded to the offer’s rejection by highlighting the benefits of their current contract proposal.
“Our strong offer provides more than 30,000 Cast Members a nearly 10% on average raise immediately. As well as retroactive increased pay in their paychecks. And we are disappointed that those increases are now delayed,” Disney spokesperson Andrea Finger wrote.
According to Disney, the new contract would pay full time Cast Members $20 and hour. There would also be the stipulation that they will continue to be paid at least $5 above Florida’s minimum wage.
The new contract would have also given Cast Members a nearly 10% pay increase during the first year. It further included retroactive back pay for Cast Members dating back to October 2022.
Now that the union has rejected Disney’s latest proposal, it will be back to the bargaining table for the two entities.
Rising Costs of Living
One of the biggest talking points for Florida cast member’s has been the rising cost of living in Central Florida. As prices for housing continue to increase in the area, Disney World Cast Members feel as if their pay is not keeping up.
According to union members, this collective bargaining cycle will allow them to insure that wages finally keep pace with the increased cost of living.
“I am beyond ecstatic because this is a ray of hope for my fellow Cast Members that are living outside of their cars, living in the streets, that are living in hotels,” Cast Member Annie Sierra said.
