This Day in Disney History: November 27
Welcome back to our tour through the Walt Disney Company’s past. Today we are looking at the events of this day in Disney history- November 27.
November 27th saw the release of two massive Disney films, and little remembered short, and the beginning of a Disney holiday tradition. Let’s take a closer look!
How To Relax Debuted (1957)
On this day in 1957, the Goofy cartoon “How to Relax” debuted on the Disneyland TV series.
In Goofy’s newest short, the everyman attempts to explain human’s desire to relax. The short begins in prehistoric times, before moving to modern days, where Goofy tries various relaxation methods.
Live-Action 101 Dalmatians is Released (1996)
On this day in 1996, Disney’s live-action version of 101 Dalmatians was released.
Starring Glenn Close as Cruella de Vil and Jeff Daniels as Roger, the film was a remake of the 1961 Disney classic. Unlike the original film, the 1996 remake used real Dalmatians!
101 Dalmatians was a massive box office success. In fact, the film would eventually set the record for the biggest Thanksgiving Eve opening ever!
It’s A Small World Get Holiday Overlay (1997)
On this day in 1997, Disneyland’s its a small world received a holiday overlay for the first time.
The new holiday themed version of the attraction featured new lighting, some in-ride decorations, and most notably, the addition of Jingle Bells and Deck the Halls to the attraction’s soundtrack.
The its a small world holiday overlay would return to Disneyland every year following its introduction.
Frozen Released (2013)
Finally, on this day in 2013, Frozen was released.
Loosely based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale “The Snow Queen“, Frozen is Disney’s 53rd animated feature film.
Frozen would go to become a worldwide phenomena, eventually grossing over 1.2 billion dollars. A sequel, titled Frozen II, was subsequently released in 2019.
Frozen tells the story of Princess Anna as she joins an iceman, his reindeer, and a snowman to find her sister Elsa, who has trapped their kingdom in eternal winter.
