Snow and Ice in Disney’s Frozen, Artistically Accurate
Did you know that much of the snow and ice in Disney’s Frozen behave as they should in the real world? Truly, Disney worked with University of California scholars to create realistic and scientifically accurate snow scenes.
Winter Wonderland
We all remember the iconic Frozen scene when Queen Elsa of Arendelle turns the entire area into an eternal winter. Also, Anna, Olaf, Kristoff, and Sven hike through the deep snow, try to protect themselves from the wind, and race from wolves while in a sled.
During all these (and more) noted scenes, Disney used the UCLA algorithm. Scholars appropriately nicknamed the algorithm “the Matterhorn.”
The Algorithm
The Matterhorn was based on the material point method, which is a mathematical technique that simulates solids’, liquids’, and gasses’ behaviors. UCLA scholars used the algorithm to produce several snow types and how they would behave in different situations.
UCLA’s Dr. Alexey Stomakhin said, “Snow is an important character in the movie. We really wanted people to believe it’s real snow.”
Icy Isolation
Additionally, Frozen is about isolation, reflected in the ice and snow. Uncontrolled icy powers seemingly curse Queen Elsa; therefore, she locked herself away for years after accidentally hurting Anna.
After their parents die, Elsa isolates herself even more. She shuts Anna out and becomes surrounded by snow flurries during her grief.
However, researchers from the University of Toronto believe that loneliness feels physically cold. In fact, two of their experiments tested this theory.
The Experiments
One experiment asked one participant group to remember a time when they felt socially excluded. The other participant group recalled a memory where they felt socially included. Then, both groups estimated the temperature of the room while they pondered their memories. The socially excluded group reported lower temperatures.
During the next experiment, participants played a virtual game where some players were “thrown” a ball while others were left out. Then, the participants were to name a food they desired. The excluded players “reported greater desire for warm food and drink than included participants.”
Physical and Emotional Accuracy
Therefore, the experiments’ findings “revealed that social exclusion literally feels cold.” Do you agree with the conclusions, or are they too far-fetched?
