Disney also revealed an interesting tidbit about this retelling of beloved animated film The Little Mermaid. According to Disney, more than 60% of all fabric used in the show, including 22 of 25 costumes was made from plastic debris recovered from the ocean!

Pretty incredible right!? The plastic debris recovered from the ocean was actually scooped out of the see and melting into threads that were woven with material emulating fine silk, chiffon and cotton! The fabrics were then dyed using a waterless printing method that saved tens of thousands of gallons of water (when compared to traditional dying processes! )
Designers experimented with the small batch dyeing method to perfect fabrics in bright hues and bold patterns!
Using recycled materials and reducing water waste is part of Disney’s continued conservation commitment and the end product is still one-of-a-kind show-stopping costumes and these have a unique story. To create the incredible array of fabrics needed for the production, designers partnered with fabric technology experts to create the custom ocean-recycled textiles.
The use of debris material in a Disney Cruise Line production demonstrates that sustainable materials can be used to create long-lasting and high quality items, like costumes. In addition to these items, crew and cast members across Disney Cruise Line have had their uniforms replaced with fabrics made from recycled water bottles.
So next time you head out to see aboard the Disney Wish, be sure to pay special attention to the incredible costumes you see onstage.
