He is Groot: Vin Diesel Returns to Studio to Voice Beloved Guardian
We … Are … Stoked! In a video post on Instagram, Vin Diesel, the voice of Groot, announced he is getting back in the studio to record his signature role. Groot is scheduled to appear in several upcoming Marvel Studios productions, including “Thor: Love and Thunder”, “Guardians of Galaxy: Vol 3” and “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.” Though it’s unclear which project Diesel is working on now, his video certainly stoked excitement.

In the video, Diesel first expresses his gratitude to his sound engineer, Doc Kane. He began collaborating with Kane on the “Iron Giant” in 1999. Diesel then declares, “Now, we’re doing Groot.” The always-cool Diesel wears an N-95 mask during the video as well as a pair of shades indoors. Behind him, Kane sits in his recording studio. As Vin turns, a small screen sits behind him with a paused image of a man in a white room with doors. The quality isn’t high enough to determine who it is, but it does resemble Paul Rudd. One can only wonder if this is a spoiler for “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.”
It’s safe to say voicing Groot might be one the easier jobs on the planet. After all, the original Groot only uttered four words on screen before he perished. Diesel’s signature voice did receive a bit of dubbing in later “Guardians” appearances with it going up multiple pitches for the younger Groot. Despite the lack of utterances, reports show that Diesel received around $13 million dollars per movie for a total of $54.5 million. (In contrast, Bradley Cooper supposedly received around $6 million per movie despite the expanded vocabulary. I’m sure Thor would say, “Rabbit needs to get ahold of Tree’s agent.”)
A Rocky Return to the Big Screen
Recently, those involved with the “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise seem to mirror the chaotic ups and downs of their on-screen characters. In 2017, “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 2” released to great acclaim with “Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout!” opening the same year at Disneyland. Adding to the excitement, “Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind” was announced for Walt Disney World that year with an opening date set for this summer. At the time, it seemed nothing could stop the intergalactic misfits from taking over the world.
Then in July of 2018, the mastermind of the series, James Gunn, was unceremoniously fired from Disney. This caused incredible confusion and uncertainty around the series. After some behind-the-scenes sorcery by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, Gunn was rehired in October 2018.
With creatives back at the helm, the Guardians return to the spotlight with “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special ” dropping on Disney+ in December 2022 and “Guardians of Galaxy: Vol 3” set for release in May 2023. However, don’t count out this shrubbery from appearing in other projects!
