‘Eternals’ Tops The Box Office with $71 Million Openening
Marvel’s newest adventure has gotten off to a tremendous start as Eternals tops the box office with a reported $71 million dollar opening weekend.
One of the MCU’s most anticipated films, Chloe Zhao’s superhero epic has exploded out of the gates with an opening weekend that makes it the most-watched film of its release weekend; and the fourth most of the year.

Relative to the profitability of Marvel’s previous Phase Four releases of this year, Eternals $71 Million puts it behind both Black Widow’s $80.3 million, and Shang-Chi’s $75.5 million opening weekends respectively.
Despite pretty remarkable early reactions, the film has been one of the more divisive entries into the Marvel mythos; garnering mixed reviews, and settling as Marvel’s lowest reviewed film on the highly publicized Rotten Tomatoes.
Eternals enters into theaters a week after the highly anticipated sci-fi adventure, Dune, which saw an impressive opening weekend that paled in comparison to what the newest MCU adventure was able to display
For context, Dune– a film that has experienced years of anticipation amidst the pandemic- opened to a $41 million dollar box office; displaying the power of the Marvel Studios brand.

Despite the less than stellar reviews and the superhero fatigue that has seemed to circle any attempt within the genre, Eternals has once again proven the ability for these MCU films to connect with audiences.
The film seemingly maintains Marvel’s commitment to heart and humor, while delivering it alongside Chloe Zhao’s immense talent for beautiful imagery, and her penchant for visual storytelling.

Although many have been put off by the narrative of the film, and the incredible task that the story had taken on (with introducing 10 characters being difficult for any director) Eternals still has seemingly continued the Marvel string of success in the box office.
With so much to come from the film, and its continued Phase Four legacy of breaking the MArvel mold, the news that Eternals tops the box office is certainly not surprising for the next chapter of MArvels massive universal story.
