The Mandalorian May Have Shown The Way To A Weapon More Deadly Than The Darksaber
The Mandalorian has proven to be a series acclaimed by critics and viewers alike. The series has introduced new characters, and reinvigorated beloved yet forgotten ones. All while making a galaxy far far away feel like an unexplored new experience, and like the home we all know it to be.
One of the great developments of the Mandalorian has been its use of the feared darksaber. A weapon created and introduced to the canon by The Mandalorian contributor Dave Filoni, the weapon has become synonymous with the Mandalorian race, and their capably violent existence in an ever threatening universe.
Created by Tarre Viszla, the first Mandalorian to be a part of the Jedi Order, the famed blade can only be won in battle. Not only does victor ensure ownership of the weapon, but it also transfers the leadership of all of Mandalore.
The finale of season 2 saw the exploration into Bo-Katan Kryze’s obsession with the blade, and just why it meant so much to her.
Din Djarin’s victory over the evil amid Gideon means that the blade is rightfully his; and Katan must now challenge him for the blade, and thus the right to leadership of her home world.
The darksaber, although being rooted in dark side energy, and sporting a differing design than traditional lightsabers, is very much a lightsaber. Forged by a Mandalorian Jedi, there is little that sets it apart from the weapon of the Jedi.
Although a wonderful example of Dave Filoni’s contribution to Star Wars through his Clone Wars and Rebels series, the darksaber isn’t the only weapon Mandalorian viewers could potentially see from John Faverau and his collaborator.
There is another, far more dangerous, weapon available to them; the Mortis Dagger.
The Dagger of Mortis
A weapon rooted in the triune force brings; the Father, The Son, and The Daughter, the Dagger of Mortis was used by the Father as a means of controlling his wildly powerful children; while also being the only weapon capable of fatally wounding these beings of the force.
Introduced in Filono’s run on the Clone Wars series, the Father meets Anakin Skywalker, and confirms his place as the chosen one.
The dagger is eventually used to kill beloved Character Ahsoka Tano; before being used in conjunction with the daughters life force to bring her back to life. The episode sees the Father and Daughter both die, while the Son becomes a mortal being.
The question remaining is; why does the Dagger of Mortis matter in Faverau’s Mandalorian?
The answer lies in Disney’s commitment to exploring Filoni’s contribution to the Star Wars universe. Ashoka was vital to the Mandalorian’s quest in season 2; and Disney has announced her own highly anticipated live-action spinoff series.
Rangers of the New Republic, and The Book of Boba Fett clearly display Disney’s willingness to follow Faverau and Filoni’s vision; a vision that, up to this point has relied heavily by Filoni’s canonical impact on the series.
Only time will tell what role the Dagger of Mortis plays in future spin off shows, if any. One can only be certain that the dark saber will not be the final connection between The Mandalorian, or future Disney+ Star Wars series, and Filoni’s long running animated series.
