Will Qui-Gon Return in Obi-Wan Kenobi on Disney+?
Will we see Liam Neeson join Ewan McGregor appear in Obi-Wan Kenobi on Disney Plus?
Star Wars is funny.
In fact, one of my favorite scenes in the most recent trilogy is when Commander Poe Dameron (Oscar Issac), his X-wing bearing down on a First Order fleet, repeatedly inquires about “General Hugs.”
General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson), repeatedly wondering if Dameron can hear him, it told by an adjunct, “I believe he’s tooling with you, sir.”
Pure comedy.
Star Wars actor Harrison Ford — who is much more savvy than many believe — is CONSTANTLY tooling with the press.
- Do you really think that Ford mixed up Chris Pine and Chris Pratt?
- Do you really think he doesn’t “care” about Star Wars?
Well, I have my own opinion: Ford is playing a part. He is having fun.
Otherwise, why in the name of the Force would he have shown up in The Rise of Skywalker.
So now, when I see Liam Neeson…
a.) Asking if Star Wars is fading theatrically?
b.) Expressing no clue about the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney+.
…I think Mr. Neeson is tooling with us. Sir.
I mean, Neeson actually said he had no idea idea how much people appreciate his Star (Wars) turn as Qui-Gon Jinn. He told Collider’s Steven Weintraub, “I’ll be honest with you: I haven’t heard that at all.”
Then, after being “told” about the upcoming Disney+ series, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and asked if he’d like to be involved, Neeson said: “Sure, I’d be up for that, yeah.”
You see, what I hear there is:
“I actually can’t say anything here as I have some pretty iron clad NDA clauses with Disney, so I am going to do what my fellow UK-native Ewan McGregor did for years when asked about coming back as Obi-Wan and lie through my teeth.”
Watch the interview:
BTW: Neeson Has Been Here Before
My hot take:
Liam Neeson’s Qui-Gon will be front and center throughout the series, a literal angel on Obi-Wan’s shoulder, helping the man who would be Merlin to Luke Skywalker’s Arthur with certain PTSD and regret.
Do I have sources. No. Any inside insight? No.
So, why do I believe the above?
We, as Star Wars fans, deserve it.
Simply put, it would be fun to see Obi-Wan argue with a ghost. It would be enlightening to see Qui-Gon admit that both he and Obi-Wan, in fact all of the Jedi, made serious mistakes.
Moreover, how amazing would it be to see Neeson’s Jinn counsel McGregor’s Kenobi toward the sacrifice coming down the timeline.
BTW: Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon communing on Tatooine is already canon.
Read this passage from Star Wars: From a Certain Point of View:
The name is spoken by another. Qui-Gon has been summoned. He draws upon his memories of himself and takes shape, reassembling the form he last had in life. It seems to him that he feels flesh wrap around bones, hair and skin over flesh, robes over skin—and then, as naturally to him as though he had done so yesterday, he pulls down the hood of his Jedi cloak and looks upon his Padawan.
Sure, I’d be up for that, too. Yeah.
May the Force be with us all….
