NFL QB Cam Newton Again Honors Chadwick Boseman
New England Patriot Cam Newton Features Black Panther on his pregame cleats.
Cam Newton is having a pretty exciting year at the helm of the New England Patriots offense. And the long-time football star (and celebrity) has often been compared to Superman because of his signature “Clark Kent” touchdown celebration and his penchant for the spectacular.
However, this season the Patriots new quarterback (he follows the departed Tom Brady into the New England fold) made it clear another superhero is on his mind.
Earlier this season, the former University of Florida and Auburn University standout gave the “Wakanda Forever” salute after scoring a touchdown New England.
Universes Collide With Netwon
MickeyBlog.com covered that story:
After the game, the talented Patriot quarterback posted:

And then, this afternoon, New England’s official Twitter account posted:

New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton has added a new gesture to his touchdown celebrations in 2020. Before pretending to rip open his jersey as an homage to Superman, Newton has thrown up his arms in an “X” as a tribute to “Black Panther” actor Chadwick Boseman.
Boseman died in August after a battle with colon cancer. He was 43. A number of athletes paid tribute to Boseman on social media following Boseman’s death.
Newton, 31, continued that tribute in Week 3, showing off custom cleats that make reference to “Black Panther” and Boseman. One cleat reads “Wakanda forever,” the other features and image of Superman holding the Black Panther mask.
Cam Newton: Writing His Story
For a player who is writing an impressive comeback story, Newton couldn’t have chosen a better character to emulate.

While some worried about Newton’s injury history coming into the season, he’s looked resurgent through two games. Newton has thrown for just 1 touchdown, but he’s rushed for 4 scores, and seems to have taken to the Patriots’ offense well.
Yahoo also noted that (Greg Antonelle’s favorite) New York football Giants receiver Golden Tate also added Boseman’s face to his footgear (while also including the late Kobe Bryant on the other foot).

Finally, here’s hoping the tributes continue.
#WakandaForever, indeed.
