NEW VR Experience Shows A Second Cantina At Galaxys Edge! Could It Be Coming To Parks?
Could life be imitating VR? According to a piece yesterday in the Orange County Register, a new Galaxy’s Edge based virtual reality experience could give us a taste of further development plans at the Star Wars-themed lands at Disneyland and Disney World.
The new “Star Wars: Tales From Galaxy’s Edge” virtual reality experience was revealed during Comic-Con this week and introduces NEW locations and character on the Star Wars planet of Batuu (which is the setting for the 14-acre Galaxy’s Edge.) The collaboration between Lucasfilm’s ILMxLAB in partnership with Walt Disney Imagineering blurs the lines between real-world theme park fantasy and video game hyperreality.
Let’s take a look at the video reveal of the project:
So the obvious question asked by the OC Register after watching this video is does Disney have plans on expanding Galaxy’s Edge to imitate this VR World?
This may actually be an example of life imitating art! Imagineers have been very vocal about the fully immersive nature of Galaxy’s Edge. Their goal was to integrate the Star Wars theme park into movies, video games, comics and books. Through these mediums the hope is that the theme parks lands can influenced Star Wars lore and vice versa!
The new Batuu bar in Galaxy’s Edge is called Seezelslak’s Cantina, run by an alien that we’re told is a bit of a drunk and has a love-hate relationship with porgs.Dubbed Seezelslak’s Cantina, this watering hole is located next door to Oga’s Cantina.
For those familiar with the layout of Galaxy’s Edge, from images in the video above you can see through the open window of the cantina Docking Bay 7 restaurant as well as Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities. Curiously enough, there is unused storefront space in the CURRENT Galaxy’s Edge at the theme parks next to Oga’s Cantina as well as directly across from it. Could Disney be handing on to this prime bit of Galaxy’s Edge real estate to introduce this new cantina?
It might not be such a bad idea given that Oga’s Cantina at the Galaxy’s Edge have proven incredible popular. Guests must make advanced reservations just to enter Oga’s which have been known to sell out well in advance. Its also a good money maker for Disney with cocktails starting at $18 and going up to as much as $85 for souvenir mugs and collectible beer flights.
The proprietor of this new cantina is Seezelslak, a six eyed Azumel similar to the character Han Solo played sabacc with in 2018’s Solo film. In the VR project he is voiced by Saturday Night Live comedian Bobby Moynihan. Kishore Vijay lead animator had this to say about the bar-owner, “He enjoys his life, He’s got a bit of a belly. He samples too much of his own goods.”
He also adds a wonderful bit of storytelling to Galaxy’s Edge and has been known to regale patrons with tales of the Millennium Falcon which is parked nearby. “He really gives you a gateway into the world of Galaxy’s Edge,” ILMxLAB senior producer Alyssa Finley said in the video.
We’ll be following the progress of this collaboration between Lucasfilm’s ILMxLAB and Disney Imagineering closely. Readers are encouraged to keep following along with MickeyBlog for further Galaxy’s Edge related news and updates.
