Disney Dominates the Streaming Charts
Disney’s streaming services don’t have Bridgerton, but it seems like they cover everything else that viewers want to watch.
According to the latest Nielsen streaming charts, Disney titles locked down seven of the top ten programs overall!

Yes, Disney dominated the top ten on streaming. Let’s discuss another component of a very successful week for the Mouse House.
Disney Claims Half (Or More) of the Top Four

We’ve got a weird situation to discuss with this week’s Nielsen streaming ratings.
As a reminder, Nielsen delays publication of these by four weeks.

Wall Street Journal
So, we’re discussing the ratings for the week of May 13th through May 19th, 2024.
The number one program for that week wasn’t a Disney production.

IMDB
Instead, people were pre-gaming Bridgerton in anticipation of season three.
However, Disney holds a claim to the next three spots on the list, whether it wants them or not.

Two of the two titles are familiar presences on Nielsen’s streaming charts.
Grey’s Anatomy earned its usual 1.165 billion minutes while airing on Hulu and Netflix.

As always, I remind you that the program splits suggest that more of those viewers came from Netflix.
However, recent metrics suggest that the gap is closing between Netflix and Disney’s streaming duo of Hulu and Disney+.

Ergo, the split isn’t as extreme as it was when I started this article series last year.
Of course, the other recurring theme is the popularity of Bluey, which I maintain is playing a factor in Inside Out 2’s opening weekend.

Because of Bluey, people trust the Disney brand again, even though it’s licensed content rather than an original Disney property.
For the week in question, Bluey gained another 1.119 billion viewer minutes. That’s in line with its typical performance.

Bluey only finished fourth, and it’s third place that provides a curiosity this week.
Madame Web (!) on Netflix claimed 1.162 billion viewer minutes.

That product is technically a Sony film streaming on Netflix…BUT! It’s a Spider-Man character owned by Marvel.
So, that is a Disney title of sorts. Should I include it here? Probably not.
Also, the movie is terrible, which raises the question of why people are watching it.
Other Disney Streaming Hits

We’ve already discussed two or arguably three Disney streaming options thus far in the overall top ten.
Well, we still have four to go, as it was the kind of week for Disney.

As a reminder, Disney finally settled the Florida Feud and agreed to a new development plan at Walt Disney World.
As I mentioned, Inside Out 2 also wrecked the box office this weekend, giving Pixar a much-needed hit.

Also, tracking suggests that Deadpool & Wolverine will be one of Marvel’s biggest films to date.
Just like that, Disney Experiences and Disney Entertainment are suddenly on a hot streak, and now Direct-to-Consumer is crushing it, too.

FAMILY GUY: The Griffins celebrate the holidays in the special one-hour “Road To The North Pole” episode of FAMILY GUY airing Sunday, Dec. 12 (8:30-9:30 PM ET/PT) on FOX.
To wit, Reba earned another 744 million viewer minutes, with Family Guy right behind at 716 million.
What do those shows have in common? You tell me. But I love linking them together for the sheer randomness of it.

IMDB
Similarly, Bob’s Burgers finished with 625 million viewer minutes, while Law & Order: Special Victims Unit managed 614 million.
Overall, the eclectic nature of Hulu programming is paying dividends.

Just this week, Nielsen tracked exceptional performances for a medical drama, a live-action sitcom, two adult animation shows, and a police procedural.
Hulu legitimately offers something for everyone, and that’s why it’s ascending in popularity.
In fact, Nielsen’s Acquired list reveals that The Resident slots right behind L&O: SVU with 608 million minutes.
So, the other popular medical procedural on Hulu only missed the overall top ten by six million viewer minutes, a fractional amount.

Criminal Minds
Meanwhile, Criminal Minds finished in tenth place on that chart with 530 million minutes, which is a bit lower than average for it.
Criminal Minds is generally the most popular police procedural on Hulu and has a longstanding foothold in/near the top ten.
Disney’s Originals and Movies Gap

Photo: Disney
If there is a downside to Disney’s streaming performance for the week in question, it’s a lack of a presence on the Originals chart.
Since Shogun ended its season, Disney hasn’t placed on Originals. The Acolyte may end that dry spell soon.

Photo: IMDB
However, no Disney+/Hulu program earned a spot here. Similarly, the Movies chart has been a recent struggle for Disney.
As I’ve chronicled, this is typically Disney’s strongest category. Lately, Netflix has dominated, though.

While Madame Web won the week on the Movies chart, I sincerely doubt Disney wants to claim that one due to its woeful quality.
So, the only entry this week is once again Moana, which managed 231 million viewer minutes.

I’ll add that I watched the Moana 2 trailer playing before Inside Out 2 in a theater the other day.
This was a decidedly Disney crowd, and you could hear the children gasp as they learned that they were getting more Moana.

With Inside Out 2, Deadpool & Wolverine, Moana 2, and Mufasa: The Lion King debuting this year, it’s safe to say that Disney movies are back!
