Iconic Fireman on a Ventilator with COVID-19
Sad news has been reported out of the Anaheim Fire Department this week. Iconic firefighter Captain Dave Baker is fighting for his life, as a result of COVID-19. An article from Firehouse states that Baker is hospitalized on a ventilator. Captain Baker is the firefighter who posed for the portrait “Mickey and the Fireman.”

Baker is one of seven firefighters from the Anaheim Fire Department who have tested positive. Consequently, he is one of two firefighters who are currently hospitalized. Firehouse reports that the first case is suspected to have come from a call within the community. A spokesman reported to KCAL-TV that “That is just the nature of coronavirus and risk of exposure that we might all encounter in our daily lives.”
The article goes on to report that four of the seven firefighters have recovered from the virus, and one is still isolating at home. Baker remains on a ventilator in critical condition, in addition to one other firefighter. Over the weekend, Orange County suffered 4 deaths with over 300 new cases of the virus. Los Angeles is also still an area of concern, with 19 deaths on Monday and over 1,000 new cases.
“Mickey and the Fireman”
The portrait, “Mickey and the Fireman” was made by illustrator Charles Boyer. It was created in order to represent Disney’s support of firefighters.
The Detroit Fire Department posted a tribute to Baker on their Facebook page. They share that Baker posed for this portrait as a rookie in the early 1990s for National Firefighters’ Day. This image is special because it is credited with being the only time Mickey Mouse is shown looking at a human.

This news of Baker’s illness is heartbreaking and is a reminder of how at-risk our first responders truly are. Our hearts go out to Captain Dave Baker and his family, and the entire Anaheim Fire Department. We hope for a successful recovery for all who have been affected.

There’s a big difference between Orange County (where Anaheim is) and Los Angeles. OC had no deaths on Monday and only 198 new cases.
