Will ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Return with a Female Lead?
I don’t know about you but I am ready for a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie! Rumors have been flying since at least 2018 that a new installment was in the works and that Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow would be out. Well, rumors are starting to pick up again and they are even suggesting that the 6th movie of the franchise will feature a female lead.
According to TheDisInsider.com, Walt Disney Studios is already working on casting a female lead for Pirates of the Caribbean and one name that keeps popping up is Karen Gillan. Gillan is known for her work in Avengers: Endgame and Jumanji: The Next Level. TheDisneyInsider states, As of now, it is unknown if the actress has had any formal talks with the studio, but the studio is definitely interested.”
The casting of Karen Gillan as the female lead in the next Pirates of the Caribbean makes sense when you think of the popularity of Redd – the red-headed pirate featured on the Disney Parks attractions around the world. She even hosts her own meet and greets at the Disneyland Resort. To me, they definitely favor each other and fans everywhere would go wild for a movie featuring Redd!
The five Pirates of the Caribbean movies have grossed more than $4.5 billion at movie theaters around the globe making it one of the most successful movie franchisees ever. The most recent release of the franchise, Dead Men Tell No Tales, made over $794.1 million at the box office over Memorial Day Weekend in 2017.
It will be interesting to see if/when production begins on the newest Pirates of the Caribbean. I, for sure, am super excited about a female lead and would love it even more if it was Redd! Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
