Zack Snyder Reveals Why His ‘Star Wars’ Film Never Happened
Zack Snyder has plenty of experience with franchises. From Watchman to Superman and the Justice League in the DC Universe, Synder has seen it all.
In a new interview, however, Snyder revealed that at the conclusion of 2013’s Man of Steel, the filmmaker pitched the idea of making a Star Wars film to Lucasfilm.

Snyder described his proposed film as “Seven Samurai in space,” a reference to Akira Kurosawa’s seminal 1954 film. Seven Samurai also just so happened to have inspired George Lucas when creating Star Wars.
“I knew that the origins for George were a lot of those Kurosawa films,” Snyder noted.

What Went Wrong
The timing of Snyder’s jump into a galaxy far, far away never worked out. Disney had just purchased the franchise and the future of Star Wars was uncertain.
“There was that window where, you know, who knows what’s possible? I was like, ‘I don’t want any of your characters. I don’t want to do anything with any known characters, I just want to do my own thing on the side,'” he recalled.

Even more so than Disney’s purchase of Lucasfilm, Snyder’s film may have been undone by his proposed rating.
“And originally I was like, ‘It should be rated R!’ That was almost a non-starter.”

Setting Out On His Own
Instead of joining Star Wars, Snyder took his sci-fi ideas and created his own universe with Rebel Moon. The upcoming Netflix film is being pitched as a multi-chapter saga.

The film centers around a rebel fighter on the fictional moon of Veldt, who wages war against an oppressive government in order to atone for her dark past.
As a Star Wars fan, I would have loved to see what Snyder would have done with the franchise, but it sounds like it just wasn’t meant to be.
