Scarlet Johansson Gives an Update on ‘Tower of Terror’ Movie
While Disney’s Haunted Mansion may have not been the success that many were hoping for, it doesn’t sound like Disney is going to shy away from making attraction-based films anytime soon.
Next up, could be the Scarlet Johnannson-led Tower of Terror reboot.
The Black Widow star signed on to star and produce a reboot of the 1997 TV movie inspired by Disney’s theme park ride.
Disney and Johannson’s Public Battle
When Johannson and Disney went to court over the studio’s decision to release Black Widow, many feared that the relationship between the studio and the actor would be permanently fractured.
In a first for Marvel, Disney decided to release Black Widow on Disney+ with Premier Access simultaneously with its release in theaters. This was done despite the fact that Johansson’s contract specifically stipulated that Black Widow be released exclusively in theaters.
While Black Widow was a box office success, Disney’s decision to release the film on streaming simultaneously with its in-theater release caused conflict with Johansson, who had contract bonuses based on the film’s box office return.
After months of behind-the-scenes negotiations to get Disney to make good on the millions of dollars that Johansson lost out on, the actress finally sued.
Disney quickly released a statement slamming Johansson for her “callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
It was a shocking public attack from Disney, on an actress who had not only appeared in eight Marvel movies but was also a fan of the Disney brand.
No More Bad Blood
Two months later, Johansson and Disney settled their suits.
Happily, the bad blood between Johansson and Disney has dissipated. Earlier this year, the actress revealed that she is still a big Disney fan.
“We had annual passes to Disney World, and I have a real passion for the Disney parks. Also, when I was growing up, it was a great time for Disney animation — ‘The Little Mermaid’ and ‘Aladdin’ and ‘Lion King’ with the incredible soundtrack,” she said.
Update on ‘Tower of Terror’.
Despite their public feud, it sounds like Disney and Johnanson are moving forward with Tower of Terror. The film’s script was reportedly written by Josh Cooley (Toy Story 4) and directed by Johansson’s Jojo Rabbit director Taika Waititi.
With the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes now over. Johannnson is able to talk about the Tower of Terror again. As it turns out, work is continuing on the film’s script.
“It is based off the ride. Now that the writer’s strike is also over, we’re finally able to, like, dive back into polishing up this script. So, yeah, it’s a massive, huge undertaking. I’m a huge Disney fan,” she said.
While it’s great to hear that Tower of Terror is still in development, it is even better that Johansson is back in the Disney fold.
When Will ‘Tower of Terror’ Be Released
Although we don’t have a release date for Tower of Terror yet, hopefully, with the strikes now over we will hear more on the project soon.
