First Openly LGBTQ Character To Appear in ‘Onward’
Onward Spoiler Alert
Toward the end of last year, everyone was talking about the huge leap forward the Star Wars franchise took when it showed two women kissing at the end of The Rise of Skywalker. Today we share the news that Pixar is following suit with Disney’s first openly LGBTQ character making an appearance in Onward.
Featured in the image below (far right) the character, a Cyclops, named Officer Specter is voiced by openly gay screenwriter and actress Lena Waithe. In a recent interview with Yahoo Entertainment, Onward Producer had this to say about Specter, “It just kind of happened. The scene, when we wrote it, was kind of fitting and it opens up the world a little bit, and that’s what we wanted.” Director Dan Scanlon added, “It’s a modern fantasy world and we want to represent the modern world.”
Though Specter only appears in one scene in the film, she plays an important role in the storyline. As we previously mentioned here on MickeyBlog, the story takes place in a magical, suburban, fantasy realm with elves, dragons, manticores and even unicorns. It follows two elven siblings who go on a quest (using magic) to try to bring their dead father back to connect one last time.
The film is slated to hit theaters on March 6th and promises to be on of the big hits of the Spring! It also features an all-star Cast with brothers Ian and Barley played by Marvel veterans Tom Holland and Chris Pratt. Julia Louis-Dreyfus plays the boy’s mother, Octavia Spencer is Manticore and Mel Rodriguez is the boy’s centaur cop stepfather.
