Ms. Marvel, Kamala Khan, Is Turning Heads
Esquire Middle East Profiled Marvel’s Kamala Khan…
Beloved characters transcend many borders. And Marvel’s character catalog has more legs than most.
However, one relatively new character on the scene, Ms. Marvel, is turning heads worldwide.
Hello, Ms. Marvel
For Esquire Middle East, : posted
Women superheroes and those of colour were rarely featured in standalone films until the last 18-months, when Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel and Chadwick Boseman/Black Panther proved diversity could be a critical and commercial hit.
But now Disney is stepping up a gear; and Marvel is finally giving its first Muslim superhero – the 16-year-old Pakistani-American known as Kamala Khan/Ms Marvel – some well-deserved time in the spotlight.
Next month sees the character’s first big-screen debut, fighting alongside the Avengers in a videogame adaptation by the makers of Final Fantasy. Then in November, she will make history again as the first Muslim character to front a Disney+ show. But while avid comic book readers might be familiar with Ms Marvel, many mainstream Marvel fans still aren’t.
Ms. Marvel Finds Directors
The Hollywood Reporter reported on recent news on the series:
Disney+’s Marvel series Ms. Marvel has assembled its directing team.
Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the duo behind this year’s Bad Boys for Life, have been tapped to work on episodes of the series. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, a two-time Oscar winner in the documentary short category, has also joined the helming roster for the series, as has Meera Menon, whose credits include episodes of The Walking Dead, The Punisher, Titans, Dirty John and Outlander.
Ms. Marvel hails from head writer Bisha K. Ali and centers on Kamala Khan, a Pakistani American teen. The New Jersey-based hero broke ground in 2014 as Marvel’s first Muslim character to star in her own title, and she will become Marvel Studios’ first onscreen Muslim hero. Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige has said that in addition to appearing on the small screen, Kamala Khan will be included in future Marvel films. The studio is currently in search of an actor to play the hero, whose comics have explored her identity as a Pakistani American living in a religious family in New Jersey while trying to find her own way.

MCU, Captain Marvel & Ms. Marvel
As far as how Ms. Marvel fits into the upcoming crop of Disney+, Marvel Cinematic Universe-connected TV shows, Esquire added:
Ms. Marvel is promised to be set in the MCU and therefore we’re seriously hoping to see some cameos from Captain Marvel herself, Khan’s mentor and inspiration. Yet another comparison, think of it similar to the dynamic between Tony Stark and Peter Parker in the MCU. Khan is even an awkward, nerdy teen just like Peter Parker is.
And, in terms of how important Kamala Khan’s arrival will be, back in 2019 THR concluded:
When Ms. Marvel makes her debut on Disney+, it may be a game changer. For the first time, Muslims Americans may see a series that attempts to capture the daily trials, tribulations, joys and challenges that come with living in America.
