Scientists Name World’s Deepest Octopus ‘Dumbo’ After The Much-Loved Disney Character
Isn’t the picture above adorable!? And no it’s not one of Disney’s latest cartoon characters, its actually a pretty impressive new scientific find. This octopus was recently filmed at almost 4.3 miles beneath the surface in the Indian Ocean according to a piece on RepublicWorld.com. This makes it the world’s deepest-sighted octopus.
What does this have to do with Disney you ask? These little fellas have actually been given the name Dumbo Octopuses because their fins look similar to the ears of the loveable Disney elephant.
Check the tweet below which shows that the Dumbo Octopus actually uses its ear-like fins to propel through the water.

Another cool fact is that this octopus doesn’t give off ink because it rarely encounters predators that far down in the ocean deep.

These animals are also pretty tiny. The measure around 14 to 17 inches long and live about 6,900 deep in the ocean. The octopus actually hops along on the sea bed.
We love looking at this extraordinary animal and think that as far as octopuses go this one is pretty darn cute.
