People Are Watching ‘Inside Out’ Again
How excited were fans about the thought of Inside Out 2?
Well, they spent the week before the Pixar sequel’s release pre-gaming the original.
Yes, people are watching Inside Out again. In fact, it just beat Moana on the charts! Here’s what happened.
Inside Out Explodes in Popularity
MickeyBlog told you that Inside Out 2 was ready to dominate at the box office. Its tracking suggested a $100 million opening.
Then again, anyone paying attention to the box office over the past few years knows the deal.
Many films disappoint due to the declining popularity of the theatrical experience.
Thankfully, Inside Out 2 played out much differently. By the time you read this, it might already be Pixar’s biggest blockbuster ever.
Pixar executives weren’t entirely sure that the film would perform so well, though.
Days before Inside Out 2’s release, Pete Docter had indicated that Pixar could change if the movie had bombed.
Someone from Disney+ should have called their famous co-worker and reassured him.
After all, the people in that division already knew that the film would succeed.
I say this because we just got the Nielsen streaming ratings for the week of June 3rd through June 9th.
That’s the week before Inside Out 2 debuted in theaters, and it strongly hinted that the film would succeed.
That’s because fans did a bit of pre-gaming by rewatching Inside Out.
During those seven days, fans watched 282 million minutes of Inside Out, giving the movie its first chart appearance in ages.
How good is 282 million? For comparison, Disney’s most popular streaming movie, Moana, managed 277 million minutes.
For that week, Inside Out was more popular than Moana. And I suspect we’ll witness a repeat next week.
That’s when Inside Out 2 excitement reached a fever pitch, causing the film to debut with $294 million at the global box office.
I’d presume a similar behavior on streaming, with some fans hoping to find Inside Out 2 available before settling for Inside Out.
Let’s Talk about Bluey
This past weekend, Bluey debuted its latest batch of “episodes.”
Disney warned fans that these are minisodes, but some still expressed surprise over their length.
These new clips are generally one or two minutes long, which makes them glorified TikToks.
Don’t get me wrong. People are still watching them, though.
We just don’t know how much the minisodes increased viewership and probably won’t for a month.
What I can say for sure is that Bluey enjoyed another great week, finishing second overall on streaming.
The Australian animated series earned another 1.145 billion minutes, which is remarkable for a show with maybe 18 hours of programming.
That total does represent a modest decline from last week’s 1.209 billion.
However, we’ve reached the point where I view the weekly differences as statistical noise.
Overall, Bluey garners 1.1-1.25 billion viewer minutes each week, signifying it’s the most consistent program on streaming.
Disney’s Other Streaming Hits
Are you familiar with Heartland? The long-running Canadian dramedy is this week’s new streaming headliner.
Heartland has charted many times over the years, but I don’t think it’s come up since I started recapping the ratings.
New episodes tend to pop a rating, and that’s sort of what happened here, with season 17 now available.
Hilariously, when I say it’s available, I mean everywhere. You can stream Heartland on *deep breath*:
- BYUtv
- Cozi TV
- Crackle
- Hulu
- Netflix
- Peacock
- Pluto TV
- Retro TV
- Tubi
Also – and I swear this is real – you can skip the middleman by watching Heartland on Heartland.
That’s actually not named after the program but is instead the current name of a streaming successor to The Nashville Network.
Everything about Heartland on streaming is a bit weird, but fans treasure the program.
For the week in question, it garnered a whopping 924 million viewer minutes.
That was good enough for sixth place overall and third among Disney programs behind Bluey and Grey’s Anatomy.
Speaking of Grey’s, it managed another 1.099 billion minutes.
Disney’s Hulu blockbusters also maintained their typical popularity.
Here’s a quick glance at each one:
- Criminal Minds – 758 million minutes
- Family Guy – 730 million minutes
- Bob’s Burgers – 700 million minutes
- Reba – 632 million minutes
While Disney didn’t manage anything as impressive as having half the top ten overall programs last week, it was still a solid Nielsen chart.
In fact, I haven’t even discussed the best part yet…
The Acolyte Debuts
Disney+ had experienced a relative dry spell on the Originals chart lately.
While Hulu has had several successes, Disney+ was performing better at the end of 2023 with Loki and Percy Jackson and the Olympians but has struggled since then.
Now, the streaming service has another bona fide hit, though.
The Acolyte debuted on the streaming charts with 488 million minutes watched, a strong total for a Disney+ title.
Even more impressively, the show had only aired two episodes by this point. So, its popularity reflects intense interest in the series.
Since we already know that The Bear will debut on the charts in a couple of weeks, Disney appears to be fully past the Hollywood strikes of 2023.
That’s excellent news for the streaming services, which are so vital to Disney’s long-term business strategy.
