‘Inside Out 2’ Is Tracking Toward the First $100 Million Domestic Opening of 2024
Following a disappointing 2023 at the box office for Disney, the studio is set to return to the box office this summer with Pixar’s Inside Out 2.
The highly anticipated sequel to 2015’s Inside Out will take audiences back into the mind of Riley, where Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust are still at the helm.
As Riley’s teenage mind becomes increasingly complicated, the emotions from the first film are shocked when Anxiety, Embarrassment, Ennui, and Envy move in.
Early Tracking Looks Promising
While the film will not officially hit theaters until June 14, the first long-range forecast for the film’s opening weekend has arrived, and things are looking very promising.
As Inside Out 2 will be the first non-20th Century Studios release from Disney in 2024, all eyes will be on how the film fares.
Last year, Pixar’s Elemental opened to a paltry 29.5 million at the domestic office before turning things around. Eventually, after an extended box office run, Elemental would prove to be a slow burning hit and gross almost $500 million.
According to Box Office Pro, Inside Out 2 should trounce Elemental’s opening and score a first-weekend total of somewhere between $80 to $115 million at the domestic box office.
For context, Inside Out scored $90 million in its domestic opening weekend and would eventually bring in $356.4 million domestically and $858.8 globally.
Will ‘Inside Out 2’ Reach the $1 Billion Mark?
If Inside Out 2 were to open at $100 million, it would likely be the first release of 2024 to reach that benchmark. A good first weekend and strong word of mouth could even propel the film to the $1 billion threshold. That is a mark that Disney has not reached in animation since 2019’s Frozen 2.
While Elemental ended up being a surprise success for Pixar, Inside Out 2 has the potential to be a return to form. Although there is still just over a month until the film debuts, anticipation for the sequel looks to be building. If everything holds up, Disney and Pixar will have another hit on their hands.
