Jeremy Renner Admits He “Doesn’t Have the Energy” For Challenging Roles Since His Snow Plow Accident
Jeremy Renner has come a long way since his near-fatal snow plow accident in January 2023 that left the Hawkeye star with over 30 broken bones.
Despite returning to Mayor of Kingston in January to film the third season of the hit series, Renner admits that he doesn’t “have the energy” to take on more demanding roles.

“I just don’t have the energy for it. I don’t have the fuel,” Renner said on the Smarless Podcast. “ And I have so much fuel to put into this reality, this body, all this stuff. I can’t just go play make-believe right now. Because that takes a lot of time to get right here every day just so I can have a positive thought, so I can progress, so I can always keep growing.”
“I Still Struggle”
According to Renner, it is still hard for him to get into a mental space where he can focus on playing a fictional character, as he has to expend so much energy re-adjusting to reality following his accident.

“I still struggle with it sometimes to, like, I don’t take it super seriously. I’m in a character that I can do very well and I know the show very well, so it was easy for me to kind of slide back into it,” Renner said, referring to his role as Mike McLusky.

“But if it was a very challenging role, I couldn’t have taken it. Not challenging in the sense that — because the show’s challenging, but it’s if I had to go play Dahmer or something, something so far from me.”
What’s Next For Renner
In addition to his Mayor of Kingstown return, Renner has also lined up a role in Rian Johnson’s upcoming Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. It will be the actor’s first film production since the accident.
And then, there’s Marvel. While it has yet to be announced what is next for Renner’s Hawkeye, with Avengers 5 and Avengers: Secret Wars on the horizon, it seems likely that Marvel would want Renner to return. Previously, the actor stated that he would be open to reprising his role.

“I’m always game. I’m gonna be strong enough, that’s for sure. I’ll be ready,” he said. “All those guys come to my bedside and they’ve been with me all along through this recovery, so … if they want me, they could have me. It would be something.”
