Jungle Cruise Defies Expectations with $61.8 Million Opening Weekend
Yesterday, opening weekend box office figures started coming in for Disney’s Jungle Cruise starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Emily Blunt and based on the beloved Adventureland theme park attraction. DEADLINE reported that the film was having a lackluster opening and would fall to compete with Marvel’s Black Widow which came out earlier this Summer.
However, this morning, it is a slightly different story with figures that are definitely more promising. .
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jungle Cruise actually had a better than expected opening of $34.2 million at the domestic box office. As HR points out, this is despite renewed concerns over the delta variant of COVID-19. That means the film beat out Space Jam. A New Legacy to take the top opening spot for the weekend.
On the worldwide box office the film brought in $61.8 million. This means that the films worldwide gross so far is $91.8 million.
Moving on to Disney+ where the film was available to streamers for an additional $29.99 per household, the film brought in another $30 million stateside and $27.6 million overseas.
In a statement, Disney’s distribution team said of the film, “Jungle Cruise is the perfect summer adventure film, bringing a beloved theme park attraction to both the big screen and living rooms in a way that only Disney can. We remain focused on offering consumer choice during these unprecedented times, and it is clear that fans and families value the ability to make decisions on how they prefer to enjoy Disney’s best-in-class storytelling.”
